2007 Popcorn
Sale
Terry
Smith is the District Popcorn kernel and has created supporting
materials for your pack or troop's popcorn sale. Whenever
possible, these
materials have been reproduced at
UPDATE
-- Thurs. Sept. 27, 2007 Terry
returned from his holiday in the UK several days ago and has resumed
his work on the District Popcorn sale. Terry's latest message
from Popcorn Galactic Control has been reprinted on the popcorn
page. Among other things, there's important
information on the Support Our Troops
program.
The
Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner is February 9, 2008 at the Covenant
Presbyterian Church.
Please take the time to complete the Award
Recommendation Form
for a Volunteer who has rendered service to a Cub Pack, Scout Troop,
Venture Crew, or District during the year. This is your way
to
say "Thank You" to a leader who has devoted their time and energy to
serving the youth of the District.
Detailed information is available here
on the District website, but the critical dates are:
Silver
Beaver nominations must be turned in by Nov. 1
The
Monopoly card (upper left) describes a situation the district committee
would like to change. In the past, scouters who were invited to
the District Recognition Dinner had to pay for their meals. This
year the recognition dinner will feature a Silent Auction whose
proceeds
are intended to subsidize the cost of attending future
recognition dinners. Among the items being auctioned are a week
at a fishing cabin on Lake Erie. Scouters wanting additional
information or having items they would like to donate to the auction
should contact Chris Morris.
Cub Pack 432 is on the Web!
Pack 432 just put up a new website at http://www.cubpack432.org/.
The site appears to be hosted by dreamhost.com,
uses Google Calendar, and has some really cool animated graphics.
This is a great example of a simple, but very effective pack
website. Take a moment and have a look.
Random thoughts about setting up scout websites can be found on this
site at About
this site. If
your unit sets up a new website, send the link to Al Magnuson.
Your website will be listed on the Worthington Units
page and the information will also be forwarded to the Buckeye District
webmaster.
Site
Maintainance
Recently
the maintainer of this site was shown how WorthingtonScouts.org looks
in Internet Explorer.
It was pretty awful. A lot of the layout was messed
up.
It's quite likely the site also renders poorly on older
computers
with smaller screens. This problem is being investigated and
will
be corrected if possible. In the meantime, the site will look
much better in Firefox
if you have it available.
BSA Product Recall
BSA Product Recall
On October 3 the Plastic
"Progress Towards Ranks"
piece of the "Immediate Recognition Kit" (Item No.01804) was recalled
by the manufacturer.
The item may contain
lead levels in excess of U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission
standards in the paint on the totem badge. This is a voluntary recall
and pending formalization of the recall details, all consumers are
urged to
remove ALL Cub Scout Recognition Totem Badge from the child's
possession
and kept in a safe place where only adults have access. Detailed
instructions
for returning the product for replacement will be provided by the
manufacturer and posted as soon as they are available. The manufacturer
has received no reports of any injuries resulting from the
use of the
kits, but are urging this action as a precautionary measure.
The Simon Kenton Scout Shop will replace the plastic patch as
soon as new
ones are available but do not expect them for 4-6 weeks. If you have
questions or want to find out if replacements are available, call them
at 614-436-1593.

communicate with each other over the Internet, using any technologies
locally available, from web browsers to e-mail, chat programs,
microphones, scanners and digital cameras.

National
Logo Contest
In
honor of BSA’s 100th Anniversary, the
BSA would like to create a
memorable logo that captures the true spirit of Scouting... and, is
calling on Scouts all across the country to help in the effort! The BSA
has launched a national contest to inspire
creative thinking
and
engage Scouts at every level. Every registered Scout is eligible.
Entries are due by Nov. 30, 2007. Winners will be chosen in several
categories. The overall winner will work with nationally-recognized
graphic artist and Eagle Scout, Kit
Hinrichs, to format the design for broad use throughout our
celebration.

If a scout in your troop or pack
submits an entry to either of these contests, send
a copy to worthingtonscouts.org
and we'll post it online.

All too often
it's those without integrity who make the headline
news. When corporate scandals break, no one really ever hears much
about the "boy scouts" of business, or those who play by the rules.
Maybe it's time
more people did. And from what better source then the new top Scout,
Robert Mazzuca?
Worthington Recharter turn-in
will be Saturday, Dec. 1.
Location TBD
Donuts available on a first-come,
first served basis, bad jokes served continuously.
Rechartering
Chartered organizations
are issued a charter,
effective for one year, to operate a Scout unit.
Every
year, Worthington area packs, troops and crews must renew their unit
charter. Among other things, this process involves a review
of
the unit roster and preparation of various electronic and paper
records (plus signatures) which must be submitted to the Worthington
ADC, Chris Morris, on Saturday, December 1. These materials
must be turned over to Buckeye District
no later than Dec. 14
(per the District
Calandar). The December 1 deadline is to give Chris
and his helpers time to error check and correct the records before they
go to District.
The latest and
most accurate information about rechartering may be found at
the District
website.
The November
Roundtable will have breakout sessions devoted to
rechartering -- see the District
website for the specific agenda of these breakouts.
Worthington units that need
assistance with the recharter process should contact their Unit
Commissioner or the Worthington ADC, Chris Morris.
Paper Chase Advancement
'Nuff

We come in peace
We come in peace
We've
been trolling Ebay, Travelocity, and ETrade for years. Now
this
fall, scout packs, troops, and crews can log their advancement reports
online. Detailed information is available on the Council
website, but the high points of the process include
Appointing
one of your unit leaders
Unit Advancement Processor (artist's conception at right)
Reading
the instructions (not traditional, but highly recommended . . . admit
it, you weren't planning to read them)
Previous
advancement procedures involved submitting paper reports to Simon
Kenton Council. By asking packs and troops to submit
advancements
online, the BSA hopes to avoid recording your Webelos' Arrow of Light
under your Tiger Cub's name. If that happens now, it's all
your
fault. Click here to learn more.
December is marked by
days of
celebration and aobservance for many cultures and faiths around the
world. Christmas, Chanukah, Ramadan, Rohatsu, Yule
and Kwanzaa all occur this month. Find out how the
celebrations in another country are similar and different than those in
the USA. Compare your own family's customs and traditions
with others in your community. In vite an adult from another
nation to come to your pack meeting to tell how their family
celebrates. Why not start a new tradition of service in your
pack as a way to honor the holidays this month? Work on the
Heritages belt loop and pin.
Come to Roundtable to meet other
scouters,
get ideas for your pack and den meetings,
and to find out about upcoming District and Council events!
