RIDING PROFILE
This southern Okanagan riding contains the cities of Penticton and Merritt, the district municipalities of Summerland, Logan Lake and Peachland, and many First Nations reserves.
The 2001 census counted 101,831 residents. Fifteen per cent are immigrants, and more than 20 per cent are older than 65 – the second highest proportion in Canada.
The service sector is the major industry here. Agriculture centres on
fruit trees, vineyards and cattle. Average family income was $55,985 in
2001, and unemployment was 9.8 per cent.
This riding was created in 1996 by combining the bulk of Okanagan-Similkameen-Merritt with smaller portions of Okanagan Centre and Fraser Valley East. In the 2004 redistribution, the riding lost 18 per cent of its previous population but added residents from Kamloops-Thompson and Highland Valleys, and Kelowna.

Political History
Former Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day held on to this seat for
the Conservatives in 2004, defeating Liberal Vanessa Sutton by 13,008
votes.
The Reform's Jim Hart won easily in 1993 and 1997, but he resigned in
2000 to create a vacancy for Day. Day easily won the subsequent byelection
(versus New Democrat Ken Ellis) and even more easily won the general election,
beating Liberal Tom Chapman by nearly 19,000 votes. Day served as leader
until March 2002. In 2004, Hart challenged Day for the Conservative nomination
in this riding and lost.
Before Hart, this riding was held by Tory Fred King (1979-88) and the NDP's Jack Whittaker (1988-93).

Career background: He lived in the Northwest Territories, where he worked for an oil and gas company. He lived in B.C.,
where he served as a deck hand on a Pacific trawler and also worked for the B.C. government. He has also been in the auction business
as an owner, spent time working in the forest industry and was a contractor.
Community activities: He worked with a community agency helping young offenders, street kids and the homeless and as an
assistant pastor and administrator for Bentley Christian School in Bentley, Alta. He is a former member of the Red Deer Rotary Club
and the Red Deer Branch of Royal Canadian Legion.

Provincial: Elected in Red Deer-North in 1986, 1989, 1993, and 1997
Federal: Was the first leader of the Canadian Alliance Party and served as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament after
winning a byelection in Okanagan-Coquitlam in September 2000. Was re-elected in the 2000 and 2004 general elections.
In 2002 he was succeeded by Stephen Harper as party leader.
