A federal court in has ruled in favor of the Center for Public Integrity in a case arising out of several requests for government records it made under the Freedom of Information Act. While the Department of Health and Human Services had sought to charge the Center more than $7,000 for searching for the records it requested, Judge John D. Bates of the U.S. District Court in Washington ruled that the Center is a “representative of the news media” and therefore exempt under FOIA from such fees.
