GameSpot Previews UT3[ Comment ] 18:13 PST | redef | Print News | Category: UT3 - PreviewsContinuing with this week’s series of previews, GameSpot has posted their own. If you read the previews published earlier in the week the text probably won’t have anything terribly new, but they spice things up with video interviews of Jim Brown, Steve Polge, and Jeff Morris. Here’s the video:
UT3 Server Browser To Be Improved[ Comment ] 17:54 PST | redef | Print News | Category: UT3 - Patches and FixesAnyone who is less than thrilled about the UT3 server browser need not be too worried. Mark Rein made forum post noting that they’re aware of its limitations, saying “we know the server browser needs some work.” Presumably by the time UT3 goes gold some improvements will be implemented. Yay!
... which will cause a Fury or a Cicada to appear and land on your head.
The demo doesn't include any sounds for these vehicles, but otherwise they're fully functional. The Fury comes equipped with a deadly tilting beam which locks onto vehicles, while the Cicada functions pretty much the same as it did in UT2004.
Visually Shangri La – like many UT3 maps that we’ve seen – fits in to the overall theme of UT while standing on its own as a unique map. It just feels like it belongs in the Unreal universe. As with Gears of War, Epic has succeeded in creating a coherent overall visual style while giving each level its own unique touch. This is something which many felt was missing from UT2004, with its bright colors and wildly different visual themes. While that game was impressive visually for its time, it lacked an binding overall style. It’s hard to put your finger on, but maps in UT3 just “fit”. Even given the differences between Shangri La and Heat Ray (the other DM map in the demo), they still feel like they’re part of the same game and universe. Could you really say the same about UT2004 maps like DM-Plunge and DM-DesertIsle?
UT3 Windows XP 64 / Server 2003 Fix[ 1 Comment ] 4:39 PST | RaptoR | Print News | Category: UT3 - Patches and FixesEpic programmer Daniel Vogel posted a fixed UT3Demo.exe for Windows XP 64-bit and Windows Server 2003 users who experience problems with the UT3 beta demo. The fix addresses the issue where the game would crash with the error "modified executable code is not allowed".
We created a fix for the game not starting up on Windows XP 64 and Windows Server 2003 systems. This patch has not undergone the same amount of QA as the released demo so I strongly encourage to ONLY replace the UT3Demo.exe with the one from the patch if you are experiencing the "Modified executable code is not allowed" issue at startup.
Note that this only affects Windows Server 2003 and the 64-bit version of Windows XP. If you're using Vista 64 or the 32-bit version of XP (which is the one most people have), you don't need to worry about this.

VE Plays Some UT[ Comment ] 4:11 PST | RaptoR | Print News | Category: UT3 - Previews - Elsewhere on the WebVoodoo Extreme editor Robert "Apache" Howarth was at the Epic press event earlier this week and cooked up a preview based on a few hours playing the full version of the game at Epic HQ.
I’ll admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of UT 2003 or 2004, but I did play an ungodly amount of Unreal Tournament in its heyday. The vibe I got out of UT3 is it’s a lot more like the original than some of its successors. Obviously, the graphics are better, but the underlying point is that this is something I can see myself playing for more than a couple weeks, which is more than I can say for the last couple games. I was a bit bummed out that there’s no assault or domination though... Assault, I think, would be a lot more popular today as players are used to more complex game types. Domination, on the other hand, is is what Team Fortress 2 boils down to, and look how hot is it online now. So, what is included?
The full article over here includes some photos from the day, as well as some nice high-detail demo shots.
UT3 Performance Preview[ Comment ] 16:26 PST | redef | Print News | Category: Previews - UT3PC Perspective spent some time with the UT3 demo and have produced some fancy graphs that serve to demonstrate performance variables between various NVIDIA and AMD/ATI video cards at different graphical settings. Their performance preview is quite extensive, having also tested on all 3 maps and consisting of 14 pages. Here’s part of the summary:
By far the best graphics card in my initial testing is NVIDIA's 8800 GTX card; when it comes to getting the most of out of Unreal Tournament 3 8800 GTX owners will have bragging rights for sure. I was able to play all of the demo maps at resolutions as high as 2560x1600 with all the quality levels turned up to their peak in the game settings with smooth frame rates giving me a great gaming experience. The frame rate lock of 60 FPS keeps us from seeing how much faster it really is than the HD 2900 XT or 8800 GTS cards, but keeping the frame rate near 60 is obviously the goal at Epic.
UT3 Demo Videos[ Comment ] 16:21 PST | redef | Print News | Category: UT3 - Media - PreviewsIf for some reason you aren’t playing the UT3 demo right now VE3D is hosting six videos that they created. The videos cover all of the demo maps and should give you a pretty good idea about what’s going on if you don’t already know. VE3D also has a new preview based on their experiences at the event we attended earlier in the week.
