New owners give Cayuga International Speedway its old name

June 15, 2006

NELLES CORNERS, Ont - Cayuga International Speedway is being re-born.

A group of Golden Horseshoe businessmen have purchased the 5/8-mile oval currently operating as the Cayuga 2000 Speedway. The announcement of the sale ends rumours that the track had been sold to Toronto interests.

The new unidentified owners intend to restore the track's original name, Cayuga International Speedway, as it was known when it was operated by the Bob Slack Family. In addition to the name change, major renovations will be undertaken when the racing season ends in the fall.

Prior to renovations, the season will end with a major event on September 2 - 3. The Canadian Association for Stock Car Racing (CASCAR) Labour Day Classic will feature the Super and Sportsman series, with Rogers Sportsnet televising the Super Series race.

The touring CASCAR series has been staging races since 1981.
Cayuga International Speedway was considered one of Canada's top racing venues and attracted some of racing's top drivers, including Richard Petty, Al Unser, Kale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, the Allisons (Bobby, Davey, Donnie and Kenny) and Benny Parsons.

The late Don Biederman, who died in 1999 and was inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame, was the perennial archrival to the widely known Jr. Hanley. Bob Senneker also drove down Cayuga’s victory lane many times. He won the premier running of the Maple Leaf 250 in 1971, and the 1985 Molson Export 300, an Automotive Service Association (ASA) fall classic. Prior to the ASA’s arrival at Cayuga, the season ending event for Super Late Models was always the Maple Leaf 250.

Plans for the race track will be detailed in a media conference and open house at the Cayuga speed sport facility. No date has been set for the press conference.
