Ambassador Kim is the younger half-brother of Kim Jong-il. The dictator has a full sister, Kim Kyung-hee, who is married to Jang Sung-take, a senior officer in the Worker's Party of North Korea.

Another half-brother, Kim Yong-il, died in 2000. Half-sister Kim Kyung-jin is married to North Korea's Ambassador to Austria. After being appointed his father's successor in 1974, Kim pushed his siblings out of power and sent them to work overseas.
