RANSOM
by Danielle Steel

RT Rating:
Category: MAINSTREAM
Publisher: Delacorte
Published: March 2004

Steel departs somewhat from her usual angst-ridden, ill-fated romance in her latest, with an unusual twist of fate.

Peter Morgan had it all—wealth, success and a beautiful family—until his drug habit landed him in a California prison. Fernanda Barnes lives her life for her three children after her husband apparently committed suicide when his fortune went bust. She needs to liquidate all their assets to pay his debts, though few know of her financial state. Ted Lee is a successful detective for the San Francisco Police Department, though he and his wife Shirley have grown apart.

When Peter is released from prison, he becomes part of a high-stakes plot to kidnap Fernanda's children, and Ted is the detective assigned to the case. With more suspense than romance, Steel's read is a crafty study of the main characters and how their lives intertwine. Steel fans should be content with the unique nature of this read, pleasingly different from some of her more recent novels. (Mar., 336 pp., $25.95)
