Oct. 16 - The Russian leader and his Iranian counterpart have agreed a compact which implicitly warns the U.S. not to use a former Soviet republic to stage an attack on Iran.
Putin made it clear to Washington that Russia would not accept military action against Iran. He invited the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Moscow for talks.
Iran is embroiled in a standoff with the West which accuses the Islamic Republic of seeking atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies. Washington has refused to rule out military action if diplomacy fails to resolve the row.
