GM to produce Aveo at new Mexican plant
Stephen Downer - Automotive News
General Motors will produce a subcompact car based on the Aveo platform at the assembly plant it is building in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
The plant, 250 miles northwest of Mexico City, is scheduled to be completed in June 2009.
"It looks as though it is the Aveo," a senior representative of the Mexican supplier industry told Automotive News.
GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. in Korea builds the current Aveo. GM sells it in Mexico as the Pontiac G3 and in Canada as the Pontiac Wave. The Mexico-built car will be exported to the United States and Canada.
In July, Tina Jantzi, senior manager of North American forecasting at J.D. Power and Associates, said GM will build the G3 in San Luis Potosi.
Another major GM supplier in Mexico said: "They're planning to assemble 130,000 vehicles a year there. They're talking about a Korean model."

Well, I would rather have it be Mexico or Canada personally so this is pretty good news to hear.

Well here are two great things about this...
#1... The new 1.4 and 1.6 engine is more probable now for the U.S. Market, There was speculation in June that it would pretty much be the WORLD engine for the Aveo. More power and better economy, and due to the new contract with the UAW, able to come here
#2... It's Closer to U.S. Obviously the cost of manufacturing in Mexico compared to Korea must have price advantages... Which means GM has figured out a way to make even more profit off the Aveo. I a willing to bet that the Cobalt will be produced there as well, along with the new Thetas. Shipping across the Pacific is costly... when u can do it across the border cheaper.
The new Factory should be done in Summer of 2009. These Aveos will supply the North America/South America market while the Korean ones will service Asia and Europe.
GM is finally getting serious about small cars... and they have figured out in order to keep the BOARD Members interested in this... they must make these small cars Profitable.

No one cares about the Aveo (except maybe poor people and Hertz/Avis), much less where it's made.

Uh, why? Building it in Mexico or Canada does just as little for the US as building it in South Korea.

Ah, perhaps THAT's what Zoomin' meant...more profit for GM if it's built over in Mexico vs. South Korea.
I'm telling you, if GM puts a new little engine in the Aveo, then I'd seriously consider one.
