Channel 4 drops call television after phoney phone-ins
British broadcaster Channel 4 has dropped all but one of its premium-rate phone-in competitions following the ‘You Say, We Pay’ phone-in fiasco. Over 40% of those that called premium rate lines to enter the prize competition on the channel between September 2004 and February 2007 had no chance of winning. The loss of premium rate services and refunds to viewers will cost the channel millions.
Sony PlayStation 3 tuner to provide digital video recorder
Sony is reported to be preparing to release a digital tuner to turn the PS3 games console, which seems to be gaining momentum for the Blu-ray high definition video disc format, into a digital video recorder. The news was revealed in an interview with a New Zealand newspaper. A Freeview digital terrestrial television service is due to launch in New Zealand next year.
Viewers Watch India on the web with broadband video
Watch India is an internet video service that is partnering with networks in India to offer news, entertainment, documentaries, sports and movies to expatriate viewers. In its first month of operation the service is claiming success with over 100,000 unique viewers.
Sky buys Amstrad and hires an experienced apprentice
Satellite broadcaster BSkyB has offered to buy Amstrad Plc, the set-top box company headed by Sir Alan Sugar. The cash offer values Amstrad at around £125 million. Bringing design and development skills in house will help to accelerate innovation, reduce costs, and put pressure on other suppliers, such as Pace.
now TV launches interactive high-definition coverage
PCCW is launching high-definition programming on its now TV broadband service in Hong Kong, confirming its position as one of the leading IPTV services in the world. Subscribers will be able to watch Barclays Premier League matches live in high-definition on the now Sports HD channel.
