October 10, 2007 - Sony launched its redesigned handheld, the PSP Slim, worldwide last month, and reported last week that it had already sold over half a million units in Japan. That was enough to put it well ahead of the competition, making the PSP the best-selling piece of videogame hardware in Sony's home country in September.

According to sales data from Famitsu, the month started out slow for the PSP, with the device selling 21,810 units in the first week and only 16,437 during the second week. But things picked up quickly after the Slim was released on the seventh, selling 99,340 in week three, 263,538 in week four, and finally 128,172 in week five.

Japan's September 2007 hardware sales. Looks delicious, doesn't it?
The PSP's closest competitor in Japan last month was the DS Lite, which sold 391,752 units. The only other system to break a hundred thousand units during September was the Wii, with 168,220 sold.

Also making a respectable showing in software, the PSP had the second best-selling title of the month with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops + came in at number five. While the DS sold the most software by a wide margin with a total of 1,910,400 units in sales during September, the PSP came in second with 954,100 games sold.
