The Irish Sea East West Interconnection project involves a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link between the electricity transmission systems in the Republic of Ireland and Wales. This merchant interconnector will provide open access to all electricity service providers in the market on an open and transparent basis.

The interconnection between grids increases grid reliability and blackout avoidance. The East West Interconnector will also enhance local industries competitiveness and bring benefit to the consumer by creating competition in the electricity market, reducing market dominance and driving down electricity prices.
