The Evolution of Yahoo! 360

On Yahoo!’s Q3 Earnings call today, it was announced that we intend to transition Yahoo! 360 to a more integrated Yahoo! experience in early 2008. I want to provide additional information on this news and assure you that we will minimize any disruption to you and our valued Yahoo! 360 community. I also want to assure you that you can still use all the features of Yahoo! 360 until this transition takes place in early 2008.

We will be sharing specifics of this transition over the next several months, but I can tell you today that Yahoo! 360 will transition to a new universal Yahoo! profile that will be closely tied to other relevant services across Yahoo!, and will include improved blogging capabilities.

With the announcement of this transition, we assure you:

  • We will preserve your Yahoo! 360 blog content, profile photo, nickname, and friends lists during and after the transition
  • We will provide the right tools to move your blog content;
  • We will give you ample notice before this transition begins in early 2008.

The vibrant community that has flourished on Yahoo! 360 is important to many people, and it is important to Yahoo!. Providing a smooth transition is a top priority for us, and we want to emphasize that we are committed to preserving your blog content and friends lists throughout the transition.

Many of you have asked if Mash, Yahoo!’s experimental profile service, will replace Yahoo! 360. We know this is an important question for many of you, and even more so given this news. We don't have all the answers today, but we are testing solutions, including Mash, in order to provide a more integrated universal Yahoo! profile throughout the Yahoo! network.

We hear your concerns. We are listening to your feedback, and we are committed to providing a more useful, engaging, and valuable service in the future.

I can't upload 2 more files in my page

How does this affect RSS feeds and Geocities? I have a 360 profile, and a seperate gecities page I am very proud of, as well as I purchased a re-directing domain name for the geocities site. If not for the word 360 in the names, the urals for my 360 profile and my geocities site (the real url that my purchased name points to.) would be the same- and I want them to remain DIFFERENT sites. I have worked hard on both and do not wish to loose either.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:07pm (EDT)

Thank You.. Very well said.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 03:45pm (PDT)

Will this affect our page view count? I'd hate to have to start over, considering I have over 80,000.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:55pm (EDT)

Sounds good to me! As long as the transition is smooth for the users, I'm all for it. :)

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 04:57pm (MDT)

My friends and I don't want a "Yahoo" Myspace or facebook, we like it exactly how it is, completely focused on blogging. Make the Mash the new profile page if you really want but keep the blog the same. And tell those still in the dark well in advance what Mash it and how to use it. Especially that if they don't want people changing their page they can go to settings and make it so.

Fix the bugs, I still can only upload two avatar photos, many friends flickr photos are messed up, and blogs still disappear just by hitting preview or post. Fix the bugs that's what we are asking for. Not a completely new feel.

If you were listening you would know that. I've lost at least 10 friends who have grown so frustrated with losing blogs and the lack of functioning on the site. These friend were good friends, bloggers that have been on here for 2 years. You'll be losing a lot more before early 2008 comes. My blogs are all backed up, and I can only hope that you keep your word and don't lose a single blog in this "transition".

I just want the 360 I've known and loved back. Thanks for at least posting an update, but its clear you do intend to incorporate Mash and 360. I feel bad for the mass amounts of people who don't even know what you're talking about when you mention Mash. Still more clarification is needed about all of this and we shouldn't have to leave over 1,000 comments before you reply.

My 10 cents and the common sense of my dear friends, Meg

Thank you so much for responding and answering some of our questions!!!!

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:58pm (EDT)

dont turn this integrated profile into a version of myspace please. if i liked myspace id be there. i chose 360 for a reason. its for adults. and not some juvenile high school click.

I hope you will debug the current Yahoo 360 before you work on new enhancements. I'm not saying this to be sarcastic, but I've been waiting to get my personal pictures uploaded again with my avatar. I cannot load any personal profile photos. I complained twice about this, but it remains unfixed. This does not encourage me to go to a new Yahoo system. Please work on the current problems, too !

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:00pm (EDT)

Blah Blah Blah..and more blah..more promises..more empty air. I have that many bugs on my blog now that you do not fix..tody I find my groups missing..another bug. Seems to me yahoo could not cope with this 360 and fix it so that it was pretty much always an enjoyable experience..all it is mostly now is a battle..what makes you think some new fangled 360 is going to be better, is going to have all the current bugs not going to be just another battle etc? Talk is cheap..actions speak louder than words..and yahoo's word really does not have good credibility!!!!! Do what ya want..ya will anyway.

Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 09:00am (EST)

Looking forward to a *smooth* transition...

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:01pm (CDT)

Well, at least you are finally saying something. Sure wish it was that you were going to just fix what we already have. I don't need more services .. I just need the ones, we are supposed to have, working.

Will I ever get to have my 4 profile pic spots back on my page or am I down to just the two I am left with forever?

Will the Flickr photos EVER show updates?

Will we lose all of our page view numbers that we have built up here?

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:01pm (EDT)

Sounds good. Now if we can share the flickr photos on Yahoo 360 it would be better.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:02pm (EDT)

If I use Yahoo!Mash, can I transfer all my blog's content from Yahoo 360 to Yahoo Mash?

Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 06:02am (ICT)

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:02pm (EDT)

It's about time you guys said SOMETHING. It's not what we wanted to hear, but it least we heard from you.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 04:02pm (PDT)

Hi Matt, Are you gonna placate us for a while now? We so loved all of Darrell's non answers, are we commenting here for nothing again?

I appreciate a blog with some substance in it for a change though, at least you are letting us know something.

And if you are listening to our concerns, and there are so many of you at Team 360, why is it that one or more of you can't find time to blog more often and let us know what's going on?

Surely a blog updating us more often is easier and more feasible than everyone commenting here, at Mash, at Yahoo answers, etc. Surely it's better than all of the rumors that are flying around. Most of us find time to blog once a day at least and not get paid for it. Can you just drop a line more often?

And I want to make sure you hear the main concern, in case you didn't read all 1500+ comments on the last blog.

We do NOT like MySpace or FaceBook, or any of those other sites geared more towards KIDS. If we did, we'd already be there and not here. Most of us have made this our home and the people on our lists are family. We like to BLOG and get to know one another on a more personal level than those other sites, including the new MASH allows us too.

Don't give us a glitzy new site to play on, we want to keep what we connected on.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:03pm (CDT)

I think you need to leave it alone. I don't like change. They screwed up the yahoo home page bad enough already.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:03pm (CDT)

Although it sounds wonderful to hear there will be a "smooth integration" or an intent for it anyways. Please excuse my rather lifeless response here. But Here we go again, another Yahoo upgrade with Yahoo Hell to follow. We have as 360 users battled gremlins for months trying to remain true to Yahoo and all the time we have spent here.
But the last transition never did finish. We still battle information thieves, sudden page white outs and random down times. With really little reply or reponse from the Yahoo help team.
Although a faithful user of Yahoo, and hoping to continue to be one in the future....I sure hope the announcement followed intensive testing and studies. As well as consideration to tweeks and issues created EVERY TIME Yahoo upgrades.
Thank you for the heads up, I think I will begin blog back up now. I'd rather be safe than Yahoo Whiteboarded when the transition begins.
Cringing in Utah...

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:04pm (CDT)

I like 360 just the way it is. (Wih the bugs fixed) I just need a place to vent or share my thoughtsnot a message board. THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:04pm (EDT)

Do you care? I wonder. The first sentence talks about earnings. How is this transition going to help that? Tell people what you need. Tell them to click on ads. Dont change the format thinking this will attract more peole who will do so!

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:05pm (CDT)

awwww. thanks!!!

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 04:06pm (PDT)

//# We will preserve your Yahoo! 360 blog content, profile photo, nickname, and friends lists during and after the transition //

please, :-)

Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 03:06am (MSD)

Sounds like this is going to become as hard as (myspace) and that (mash) and thats a shame. 360 was easy to firgure out so I hope you can keep it that way, Yahoo.

Now lets get back to my blog about baby powder and please leave comments, lol.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:06pm (CDT)

Mash looks like it's designed for kids with that silly feed the pet feature. I don't know why you think that a one size
fits all approach is the best one. 360 is a good product popular with 25-55 year olds (the people with money to keep the advertizers happy) and not kids.

Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 12:08am (BST)

I agree with Angel. What happened to the so-called transition to Flicker? I still can't download or up load anything to either my public profile or my 360. (yes, I've checked all my settings) Please, please, please don't transition us this time without making sure the bugs are all worked out first!

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 05:08pm (MDT)

Thanks for the info, I hope it's not mash that we have to go to because several friends have already invited me and it won't work for me! 360 is great, why not just improve on it?

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:08pm (EDT)

what's amazing here
is that you don't seem to realize that you already have a
good product

people love this place
take this good product and make it better,
but not MASH-like

Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 03:11am (MSD)

We very much appreciate your clarifying efforts. I hope you don't make too many changes, just fix what needs fixing here on Y360. We love it & our communities make life more fun, for sure, as it fosters an unprecedented scope of human sharing. Looking forward to new ways of sharing & learning together.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:12pm (CDT)

I cant start from beginning so I hope it will be a goode upgrade

Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 02:42am (IRST)

What other effect will this have on us???

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:12pm (CDT)

I cant start from beginning so I hope it will be a good upgrade

Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 02:42am (IRST)

Why you need to spoil something worked so good before you started the transition.Just fix the problems, get rid of bugs and Beta and leave us to enjoy the 360 we like!

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:14pm (EDT)

Ok...Thank You

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:14pm (CDT)

I really like my 360 as it is. I am happy with the features as they are. The only part of this entry that gives me any hope is the timeline. I can hopefully print off all of my nearly 600 blog entries and/or transition them elsewhere if possible so I do not lose them.

360 works well if the bugs are fixed. It's an adult community that many like including me. Please don't change it. It's fine. Just fix the bugs.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:14pm (EDT)

Finally some news.
I wouldn't mind cross-linking to 360, Mash, Answers and groups or whatever is offered.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 04:15pm (PDT)

Thank you for an informative post!

I've enjoyed my time here on 360; I can honestly say that the collaborative writing experience it offers has been an integral part of life. You have created a product which is popular with a more mature audience - indeed; it's ideal for people who use it in much the same manner as many who've commented before me, and who will likely comment afterward.

I'd encourage the Yahoo staff to consider enhancing 360 into a module of an 'umbrella' product which would replace the aging Yahoo "Profile", and enable access (up or down) to products like 360, Mash (or the product into which it evolves), and other products like Pipes, Flickr, etc.

The success of products such as Multiply.Com should be evidence enough that, with proper attention, 360 can continue to be a viable product for a still-thriving user community.

I'm looking forward to a better product from my friends at Yahoo!

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 04:15pm (PDT)

I hope you really can do as you say here. I'm struggling to believe that you actually do care about the people that use 360. The sad thing is, it's a good site NOW. It has a few bugs, but it's better than anything else out there that I've tried. And I've tried quite a few.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:16pm (CDT)

if Google comes out with an personal communication portal even SOMEWHAT similar to what you built and are tearing down with 360, they're gonna kick the crap out of you, not only in the market but in services.

YOU LISTENING Google?! Just think: You Tube, Maps, Earth, Gmail, Search all rolled up into one nice neat package that wants to do GOOD things in society.

Yahoo, you lose. I'll be taking my blog and leaving you before you even try to 'transition' me to whatever you've dreamed up for the 18-27 demographic audience. I want no part of it or you any longer.

Bye Launchcast...that was the best thing y'all had. You just lost a customer in Geocities too. Wow, look at this snowball effect...wonder if y'all took EVERYTHING into consideration?!

Oh and those of you tired of huge corporate earnings at the expense of shareholders? Get this: CEO of Yahoo, Terry Semel pocketed $230.6 MILLION in 2005. Makes ya wanna go running to invest in Yahoo now, doesn't it?!!!

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 03:16pm (AKDT)

so sad

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 04:17pm (PDT)

If this "smooth" transition is anything like the transition from Yahoo photos to Flickr - look out! As many others here have stated, we don't like MySpace. I liked 360 just as it was BEFORE you messed up our photo sharing. Now what? If we wanted all the bells and whistles, we would move to MySpace. Since those of us who are loyal to 360 haven't moved, what does that say to you?

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:17pm (EDT)

Preserving the content of our 360page is a nice thing to hear and moving them on this new transition is great. Hope it's still easy to access everything when this transition come that when you open a page you see all together whats inside of a page.I prefer still my hayoo 360 page rather than other sites, its much much accessible. Not like other sites.Although sometimes we're having a problem posting blog, photos & others.Just keep up the good work.Looking forward for new improvements. And Thank you for building the yahoo 360 site.

Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 12:17am (BST)

I, like many others, have enjoyed blogging @ Y360 and I certainly hope it stays. Please find some viable solution to let it stay and not be transformed into something dubious. I can safely say Y360 has carved a niche for itself and the loyal 360ites will stay here for a long time if you guys work on this product and not merge it somewhere else.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 04:17pm (PDT)

Well at least you provided an update *read between the lines... yahoo 360 users are screwed yahoo wants to compete with the teeny bopper set / facebook" Oh well

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 07:18pm (EDT)

Everyone above me has make good points, we like 360 the way it is but we hate having all the problems. You took away the photo section in hopes we would use Flickr but so many (me included) have problems with it and it's not getting fixed. Don't you have any programs working on 360 problems anymore? It would be nice if this blog space address all the problems everyone is having and what is being done to correct them. Thanks for listening.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 04:19pm (PDT)

Please make it easier to find the new area. I convinced several of my friends to join 360. However, once they set up their page, they couldn't find it again because the area it was listed kept changing.

This confused me too at first! When I joined 360 it was on the first Y! page. The next time I tried to find it, I searched and searched until I finally found it under "More Yahoo! Services."

Hint: When people can't easily find Y! 360, (or any other service) they won't use it.

Tuesday October 16, 2007 - 06:19pm (CDT)

Although I don't have anything against change itself, I really think yahoo needs to work on fixing the bugs in 360 before looking onto making new changes. If you can't make changes smoothly or successfully here, what makes you think you can make them with a new site? I do understand Yahoo wanting to appeal to the younger crowds like myspace, but how about giving us already settled into 360 and LIKING it a chance to stay as we are (and fixing the bugs)?
