4th International Conference on Environmental Education: 'Environmental Education towards a Sustainable Future – Partners for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development'

Centre for Environment Education
Date: Nov 26-28, 2007
Location: Ahmedabad, India

This Conference will be the fourth in the series of Conferences on environmental education (EE) held since the first intergovernmental Conference at Tbilisi in 1977, where the field of EE got defined. This was followed, in 1987, by the International Congress in Moscow to determine an International Strategy for Action in EE and Training; and the International Conference on Environment and Society at Thessaloniki in 1997 for reorientation of education towards sustainability at all levels of formal, non-formal and informal education in all countries in all sectors.

The United Nations has declared the decade 2005 to 2014
as the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). This makes the 2007 Conference particularly significant. The objectives of the Conference are to reformulate EE to support Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), help bridge gaps, and review the status of EE in the context of DESD. The Conference is therefore titled 'Environmental Education towards a Sustainable Future - Partners for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development'.

We expect the Conference to bring together about 1500 participants from all over the world which include government officials, representatives of UN agencies, educators from the field of environment, health, water and sanitation, human rights, gender, peace, citizenship, social justice and others, civil society /NGOs, corporates, academics, and media. The Conference will have Plenary sessions, Thematic Working Sessions,Exhibitions, Poster Sessions and Side Events which include Book Launches,Live Craft Demonstrations, Special Lectures, Film Screenings to address the wide range of thematic issues. Climate change will be addressed as a major cross-cutting issue in relevant Working Sessions and a Plenary.
