1999 FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP VENUE TOUR WILL RUN FROM OCTOBER 15-23 IN SEVEN COMMUNITIES

Representatives from the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup Organizing Committee, the U.S. Soccer Federation, ABC/ESPN, and FIFA will visit all eight Women's World Cup stadiums from Oct. 15-23. The tour will be used for making final decisions on ticketing, technology, press operations, television, hospitality as well as game operations and competition issues.

The tour will be led by Women's World Cup President Marla Messing and Senior Vice-President of Operations Emilio Pozzi. Women's World Cup 1999

The 1999 Women's World Cup is the third to be staged by FIFA. The first in China (1991) was won by the United States, and the second in Sweden (1995) was won by Norway.

FIFA expects about 70 nations to compete in the qualifying rounds. Fourteen teams will join host team USA and defending champion Norway in the final tournament.

Final dates are not confirmed but the tournament will probably take place from June 20-July 7, 1999. Organizers plan to stage games in full sized facilities nationwide. Six sites are expected to be selected later this year. Ticket prices and methods of sale will be established after venues are chosen, and may be on sale in mid-1998.

The 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup is seen as not just a women's soccer event. The U.S. Soccer Federation and the Local Organizing Committee aim to use the tournament as a breakthrough event for all of women's sports. They contemplate a number of satellite events concerning women's sports in conjunction with the soccer games. With the women's sports climate so favorable in the United States, they are confident of leaving a legacy for women's sports as well as for soccer.
