Project Taunton

River Tone

Major improvements are planned for the River Tone through the heart of Taunton. These include new and improved river walkways and cycleways, bridges, tree-lined open spaces and wildlife friendly planting and lighting.

Aspirational projects including a marina, locks and new iconic weirs at Firepool and French Weir are dependent on a successful ‘Waterlinks’ Big Lottery campaign and televised vote in late 2007 or developer contributions secured over time. The former would ensure delivery of these civil engineering projects become reality within the foreseeable future and would allow boats access from the Park & Ride on the western side of town to the town centre.

Navigation from Silk Mills would allow an alternative mode of transport to the town for visitors using the Park & Ride. Wholly dependent on Waterlinks Big Lottery funding, a Park & Glide would provide a sustainable and noise/pollution-free link between the park and ride facility and the town centre. Somerset Waterways Development Trust and the Environment Agency are working with the Project Taunton team to ensure the project is well conceived.
