22nd Street Temporarily Closed to All Traffic by Blairmore Suburban Area on Wednesday, October 3, and Thursday, October 4

All lanes on 22nd Street between Hart Road and Betts Avenue will be completely closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for installation of the 36 metre steel truss for the main span of the Blairmore Pedestrian Overpass:

  • Wednesday, October 3 between 5:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

  • Thursday, October 4 between 5:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

  • During construction, access to and from Highways 7 and 14 by the western edge of the city will be via 11th Street West. Local access to Tommy Douglas Collegiate and Bethlehem High School will be maintained.

Click here for a PDF on the closure, which includes a map showing the alternate route via 11th Street.

Inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances could delay completion of the work, and result in changes to the above schedule.

Motorists are reminded to please drive carefully, obey all signs, and watch for work crews in the area.

    Background

The Blairmore Suburban Development area is intended to contain facilities and amenities capable of supporting up to 41,000 people in seven neighbourhoods. For more information on the Blairmore Suburban Area, click here.

To accommodate the development and projected future growth of this area, Betts Avenue (Highway No. 7) was realigned from its intersection with 22nd Street West (Highway No. 14) to South City Limits. Betts Avenue is a new arterial roadway that is intended to accommodate traffic in this area until a permanent connection to Highway No. 7 is built and connected to the planned interchange. Multi-user pathways have also been constructed to the north and south of 22nd Street West for improved mobility to Tommy Douglas Collegiate, Bethlehem High School, and the Shaw Centre. The construction of a pedestrian overpass is estimated for completion in late 2007 to provide access from areas located north of 22nd Street West (Pacific Heights neighbourhood) to the civic centre and school developments.

Roadways Construction Status (pdf) details the current roadways construction status to September 25, 2007, as well as future projects.

    COMPLETED TRANSPORTATION NETWORK

The Completed Transportation Plan (pdf) illustrates the planned North West Transportation plan. This plan includes the construction of an interchange at the intersection of 22nd Street West (Highway No. 14) and Dalmeny Grid, as well as roadway upgrades to current Dalmeny Grid and Beam Road connecting to Highway No. 16 at the existing Marquis Drive/Highway No. 16 interchange.
