[custom Battlestar Galactica Cylon Sanctuary MP3 made by Chris Dexter]

NOTE: 100+ thumb nailed JPEGS below!

Why "Sanctuary" you may ask? Ode to the classic movie and TV series "Logan's Run." We wanted a name to evoke a sense of Peace, Harmony away from current events and the masses in general.

Theme: Disney/sci-fi. Disney theme will cater to the wife and son :-) Sci-fi theme is all me. They will coexist into our SANCTUARY. COMING SOON hopefully by the end of 2006: Yes, a full-size gleaming chrome silver Battlestar Galactica Cylon with Mickey Mouse. Maybe we'll have Mickey Mouse in a custom made TRON outfit. How about outfits e.g. Indiana Jones, Greatest American Hero, Street Hawk, Automan, Blade. The ideas are endless.

Why we went this route? Many reasons as follow: Tired of waiting in line. $10 a person admission. $5 drink. $5 popcorn. Parking. Cleanliness questionable. Body fluids? ;-p YEACH!! Dirty floors. Unruly people. Out of focus video. Convergence & more needed nit wit! Unbalanced sound. Sweet spot to the movie taken. Tall hair. Loud obnoxious cell phone totting teens and others. Morons with those pocket laser pointers. Again unruly people :-) Priced to kill condiments. Again only applicable to what we had experience. NOTE: I use to work for 2 local movie theaters during my teenage years. The synergistic effect of the above mentioned negatives solidified this MUST DIY project.

Friends whom will aide in this year long plus project: Some very good close friends [family-like] to aide in our long journey into the extreme :-) Arthur Chew helped with many long hauls/drives from Long Beach, CA back to San Francisco. [Arthur brought all those wonderful Disney Store Displays in his Dodge RAM truck!!] Jim Modie will aide in the electrical and as our true home theater supplier e.g. actual used home theater seats, podium, velvet rope and more. My best friend Rob Gonzalez will be assisting in the visuals and interior decorating. We expect to complete this project sometime in 2006. Hopefully sooner. Specifications of our system below. 99% of the items will be purchased via online e.g. eBay, Audiogon and other sources. Currently scouring and or lurking the www for more info. The research continues onwards.

ROOM SPECIFICATIONS: Living Room with 3 windows on the right. DVD Media racks took the whole left side of the wall.  SPECS: HEIGHT: 8 feet 3 inches -- Rear width: 12 feet or 144 inches -- Rear center [octagon like shape with 3 windows]: about 14 feet 2 inches -- Front projection screen area: 12 feet or 144 inches -- Room length: 17 feet 5 inches -- Seating distance from the projection screen: exactly 13 feet --

CEILING: ON HOLD! 12 feet x  6 feet size oval shaped fiber optic star field. Sky blue with white cloud like ceiling which will blend into the fiber optic lights section. 2 shooting stars and twinkle effects. We already have a price quote for materials only at about $1500 from www.FOSI.com

Projection Wall/ceiling color scheme: matte flat black? or some type of acoustic tiles will be used on this side to control the projector lighting. 2 movie style lights will be aimed from the bottom at a 45 degree angle to the motorized velvet curtains.  2 Greek like 7 feet tall columns will rounded or square base will bookend the screen. UP IN THE AIR For now!

SIDES and what will fill the void: dark blue hue? Right now we have 5 DVD/CD wall mounted expandable racks. Archival UV quality movie poster holder: 1 sheet and 3 sheet. Klipsch, DTS, Dolby Digital, THX signage. Custom NEON or LED "SANCTUARY CINEMA HT" marquee signage. Custom noise resilient Home Theater padding/carpeting will be added to the surround walls. Surrounding with be decorated with screen used original movie and TV props in lighted shadow boxes. Authentic move reels, clapper board, filmstrip wallpaper top molding trim and more. A custom sculpted Mickey Mouse shaped table with Mickey's hands holding up our projector.

Entranceway: ON HOLD! will be modified / converted to look like a ticket booth. An original HT EXIT sign will be used at the other end of the HT.

Columns: We are in the designing stages to build 2 custom columns to end cap our projection screen. The center column will be square in shape. We will then add authentic film reels to the top and bottom column. Can you picture it? We have an idea of adding enclosed shelving in the column and a die cut Mickey Mouse outline on the top and bottom which can also serve as a shelf to smaller collectibles items. The middles shelves will be rectangular or square shaped to hold and showcase our deluxe DVD boxsets e.g. UK import PHANTASM Killer Sphere DVD orb, Matrix statue boxset, Lord of the Rings Trilogy with statues. Way too freaking much to list. Need to have this documented here so we don't forget.

OTHER MISC. stuff added for realism and as a purist: Popcorn machine, ticket attendant booth podium and maybe a Candy concession stand.

ALSO since we live in an Earthquake area. ALL items will be secured with QUAKE HOLD products.

Equipment choices: nothing set in stone as we're uber retentive :-) We will change our choices till we fulfill the best bang or quality for the $ for the long term. Looking into mid to high end ONLY. We will surpass our $30K equipment only budget if needed. Our goal: HD High Definition 1080p 1920 x 1080 resolution even though the HD material is currently limited to nil. Upgrades: ALWAYS or when i change by mind :-) Below is the humble beginnings of SANCTUARY.

NOTE: This is not permanent as once we find our principal main home here in SF we're going all out with acoustic engineer, architect and complete THX/ISF calibration  :-)

Wed Sept 6, 2006 UPDATE: Some tidbit info on the new updates. 15 thumb nailed jpegs for your viewing pleasure. Again this is an ongoing DIY project for us. We have way too many projects hence the delay in finishing up the HT. We finally found a way to hide those fugly projection screen ceiling bolts with the help of the "HOLLYWOOD" signage. Also we will be remounting all of the gold curtain rods and velvet curtains with custom black out material sewn onto the other side. Our high school friend cut some Mickey Mouse shaped heads to add solid support and better access to the underneath location with the Allen key locking screw. We now need to fatten up those Mickey Mouse like arms [found these at a party store, these are bendable flexible cat tails] holding up our projector. The Mickey film reel head will be mounted several inches above the SANYO z4. Finally found and received the unused ICEE lighted display. Glows RED!! A picture of the HUGE KLIPSCH THX Ultra2 series KL-650 Left Center and Right. A crude but legible mock up drawing on our new and improved 2 tier, 6 seat riser which will float on lockable casters. Our Dolby Digital, THX and misc DTS DEMO DVD collection. Lastly our "2 Buck Chuck" moving dolly used on our SANUS Audio Video Euro rack. This was used to prevent back problems when giving us access to the rear back section of the electronics. We wire tied the AV rack base to the dolly with industrial strength wire ties. Pardon the long winded fragmented sentences. At least it's conveyed.

[closed --- OPEN]

SANYO PLV-Z4 LCD Projector. 480p, 720p & 1080i. Motorized open and close shutter, IRIS control, lighted remote, HDMI and more. Our small review on this projector. Retail: $2000. Screen door effect not a problem at our viewing distance. Beautiful film like images out of the box e.g. Toy Story, Lord of the Rings. Calibration needed and am learning to do this ourselves BUT for now am content with the projector output. We have it setup in 720p to 1080i. Can't really tell the difference. Need some more movie time and some fellow HT heads to drop by and review for themselves.

CUSTOM WORK: Mickey Mouse shaped backdrop with 2 Mickey trademark hands/gloves holding up the projector shelf with velvet flexible arms protruding from the back wall. We may opt for a faux mouse tail will hide the HDMI and AC cables. Any more ideas?!

Right now it's on a Peerless multi-mount wall mount model PM 600 MSRP: $50.00

Caught the upgrade bug :-) Looking to upgrade to a 1080p projector with Anamorphic lens. Will also buy an electronic scaler e.g. DVDo VP50

November/December 2004 Robb Report Home Entertainment Magazine : Klipsch THX Ultra2 speakers review. Many more positive owner reviews located online.

SANUS Euro Furniture series II EFAB-6 mkII modular AV Audio Video Rack

Purchased as 6 shelves MSRP: $450. We added 2 more shelves. MSRP for each additional shelf $50. You can have a max total of 8 shelves. We hope to have a retail or custom swivel rotating base made to alleviate back problems + easier access to cable management and connections.

FYI we just upgraded 1 shelf level from the norm 8" height with12" pillars so we can finally shelf the "Fat Bastard" INTEGRA DTR-10.5

To access the rear of the electronics we have decided to take matters into our own hands. Since the manufacturer paid no attention to our needs. We went to the local Home Depot and found a 300 lb dolly for cheap $9.99. We placed the stand on top of the dolly and then we used heavy grade plastic wire ties to strap the dolly to the A/V rack base. Looks pretty good and works well on the carpet. We will be building a skirt to completely hide the dolly in the future. This will alleviate any possible back problems or injuries to oneself. We like to tinker so this is a much needed feature on all AV racks.
