Prizes Update

I’m eager to launch this contest, but I keep finding more and more sponsors which of course takes time to process.

The contest now has $2,350 worth of confirmed prizes, and around $1,600 of unconfirmed prizes. I say unconfirmed because I’m still working out the details with the various sponsors, and some of them are waiting on site revamps and relaunches.

Here’s a sneak peak list of the prizes that we’ll for sure be giving out. All of these prizes are confirmed:

  • Choice of custom Wordpress Theme or vBulletin Skin, fully coded
  • One-Year Free Hosting Package & Domain Name
  • 5 x 3-Month Subscriptions to Quality Keyword Tool
  • $400 Cash from an Affiliate Network
  • 3 DVD’s from the Discovery Channel
  • 10-DVD copies of a brand new released full-length anime film
  • Quality Script for Video-Sharing community like YouTube

And here’s a sneak peak of some of the unconfirmed prizes:

  • 1 Large & 1 Medium Packages from a Content-Writing Service
  • 2 “Small” or “Basic” custom AdSense/content web designs
  • 1-3 Copies of a space flight/battle RTS game
  • 5 x 1-Hour phone consultations with me
  • 4 x 1-Year Sitewide 120×60 Ads on PublisherForums.com

How does that sound? Enough to sway you to participate in the contest?

Sponsor the Contest

The contest will run for 6 weeks, and your product/service will be listed on the contest’s page with a link to your site as well.

If you could donate a prize or two for the contest, it would be much appreciated, and hopefully you would gain some nice exposure and possibly conversions as a result as well.

For obvious reasons, we are not interested in giving out “coupons” such as discounts or two-for-one offers; they should be completely free prizes with no strings attached.

If you’re interested in sponsoring PublisherForums.com’s upcoming contest, please get back to me at webmaster@publisherforums.com or through my contact form.

Also, if you know of any companies, freelancers, or websites that might be interested in sponsoring the contest, please let them know about the contest or contact me and I’ll contact them myself :)

(Note: I’ll be launching the contest very soon so if you wish to sponsor the contest we will have to work together very quickly!)

When Will the Contest Start?

I’ll be launching the contest any day now. I’m only waiting on 1-2 advertisers, and getting the forum ready for the contest.

Therefore, you can expect the contest to launch within 1-3 days!

Stay tuned…

vBSkins.com Review

The following is a paid review and is completely of my own opinion and is not influenced by being paid. If you’re interested in having me review your site or product, you can purchase a review from me through PayPerPost by clicking on the PayPerPost Direct button located at the top left of my blog.

vBSkins.com, formerly known as ForumTemplates.com, is a skin design company and resource for the popular forum software, vBulletin.

 47

What’s amazing is that since its inception, vBSkins has had over 150,000 downloads of their skins. Their live stats page shows a graph of how many skins are downloaded, and they currently seem to be averaging around 400 every day. That is amazing, considering that there are only so many vBulletin forums out there.

vBSkins offers three different methods of obtaining a skin: free skins, affordable priced skins, and custom design.

Affordable Priced Skins

There is a good selection of available paid skins to choose from by browsing through their templates list. The quality of the skins are pretty good and would cost you at least a couple hundred dollars if you were to have had them specially designed for you.

But each priced skin on vBSkins is only $23, which is pretty amazing, and can be paid via PayPal for a fast and easy purchase.

Each paid skin states how many times it has been purchased so you know how many other websites may have this same skin. This is very useful, as if you can’t decide between two different skins, you will probably want to go with the one with fewer purchases.

Free Skins

The amazing thing about vBSkins is that they offer completely free skins. In fact, they have over 100 free skins to choose from, with more added frequently.

I can only imagine that this must make a lot of the other vBulletin designers and skinners out there very angry!

What’s even more amazing is that these free skins aren’t your typical low-quality, basic templates that you’d expect to get for free. In fact, the majority of the free skins are of very good quality, and would normally cost you a couple hundred dollars if you were to have had them specially designed for you.

48

This leads me to wonder why vBSkins is giving away so many free skins; I can see giving away a dozen or so, but the majority of the skins on the site, I’d guesstimate around 90%, are completely free!

vBSkins does, of course, have a tiny link back to their site at the bottom of each skin, which is to be expected, so perhaps they are working on some SEO/branding plan and will offer more paid skins in the future, or hope to convert more custom skin work.

In any case, 100 completely free vBulletin skins is good for you, and the large selection means you’ll most likely find a skin suitable for your particular forum topic.

Custom Design

In addition to the fixed-price and free skins, vBSkins.com also does custom work.

Normally I wouldn’t be able to comment too much about such a service without having actually used it, but fortunately for both you and the vBSkins, in this case I have. In fact, I purchased a total of 4 custom vBulletin skins from them.

The first was a few months back when they were still under the name ForumTemplates.com. Their price for a custom skin was an incredibly low $250, with a $50 option of removing their footer site link, which I bought as well.

I had purchased the skin for Starcraft2.net and here is what they came up with:

49

Well, that’s not exactly true. That is actually around the fourth or fifth revision, as the perfectionist and nitpicker I am, I had requested small changes until I was happy with everything.

They had made the revisions and fixes with no complaining, and of course no extra cost.

They will also give you the source files (Photoshop files), in case you want to make some modifications in the future.

A couple weeks ago I had purchased two new forums and wanted to get them skinned, so I of course turned again to vBSkins.

However, I learned that since my last purchase, they increased their price from $250 to $600 for a custom skin. I didn’t ask how much the branding-free (linkback removal) option was, but I assume it is still around $50.

Since I had wanted three skins done, am a repeat client, and have worked with the owner previously (he purchased a paid review for another site a long time ago), I managed to work out a very good deal, basically getting the package deal for half-price, including linkback removal on all 3-skins.

One thing I should mention about vBSkins is that they have pretty good turnaround times. Other vBulletin skinners I’ve worked with in the past have 4-8 week turnaround times, whereas vBSkins usually finish the job in 3-days.

Thus, I was starting to get a little bit anxious when it had been 6-days and I hadn’t received a progress update. But then I was pleasantly surprised when, 6-days after sending them my descriptions, I was sent all 3-skins! I wasn’t expecting them to all be sent at once; I had assumed they would be sent one at a time, so it was a nice surprise.

The first skin was for PotForums.com (Note: Again, I do not smoke marijuana but managed to get the domain for a good price so I plan on flipping the site. It’s also #1 on Google for “pot forums”. Anyone interested?):

50

I’m pleased with how it came out, as it met my project description and requests by being simple and themed nicely.

The second skin was for WeightLossForums.org, another recent forum I just launched:

51

I wasn’t happy with the original concept that was sent to me, so I had requested that it be scratched and completely redone. The next revision was much better, but I still didn’t like the header. So I of course got a revised header and am now pleased with the end result.

I actually received two finalized skins, each with a different color scheme: the current green/blue one, and a more feminine purple themed one.

The third and last skin was for one of my existing sites, Movie-Vault.com.

In fact, Movie-Vault’s forums is the first vBulletin forum I ever owned, and the oldest as well. Believe it or not, for over 6-years the forum had used basically the default skin, save for our logo and custom forumstatus icons.

Since the forum has over 1,000 members and 40,000 posts, I felt it deserved something better and so I had finally arranged for a custom design for it.

I wanted something, obviously, that would basically mimic the main site’s design and incorporate it into the forum as to finally make the site’s look and feel consistent (It was awfully strange before, moving from a dark black and blue palette to a white forum with just a splash of blue).

Here is what they came up with:

52

Needless to say I was very impressed! It is more than I had expected, as it seamlessly integrates our site design.

Affiliate Program

Yesterday vBSkins launched an affiliate program, which is great for me since I’m writing this review :-)

Their affiliate program is probably the most simplistic you’ll ever see; signing up takes mere seconds and then you have a referral URL you can immediately use.

A nice little feature that I’ve never seen before in an affiliate program, but absolutely love, are their notify options. You can choose to be notified via e-mail whenever a confirmed sale is made, an unconfirmed sale (pending), both, or none.

vBSkins pays out $10 per sale (of a paid skin obviously; not free ones) which is almost half of what the skin costs so you’re actually getting over a 40% cut per sale, you can’t beat that.

Payment is sent out via PayPal once a month, and a sale is marked as confirmed once it is 31-days old.

I only wish vBSkins made all their skins cost money… there are too many free ones for people to choose from!

In Summary

As far as I’m concerned, vBSkins.com is hands-down the best place to go if you’re looking for a free vBulletin skin. Anything is better than the default vBulletin skin, so why not choose from one 100 free skins available at vBSkins?

Their fixed-priced skins are very affordable at only $23, and their acceptance of PayPal makes transactions fast and easy.

Finally, their custom vBulletin work is high-quality with very fast turnaround times. While they did increase their price to $600, this is still a bit below the average price that other vBulletin skinners now charge which is typically between $800-$1000.

If you haven’t guessed already, I highly recommend vBSkins.com.

Blog Updates

October 17, 2007
Posted by Tyler Cruz

Forgive me Father for I have sinned. It’s been 6-weeks since my last blog update.

Here’s a rundown of what’s new or changed on my blog during the last month-and-a-half.

New RSS Record

A week or two ago I managed to hit a new RSS record of 843!

58

In my opinion, increasing RSS by an average of even 50 subscribers is quite an accomplishment. It helps to mark visually the progress and success of a blog. It’s also fantastic for advertising opportunities, considering networks such as ReviewMe and PPP factor in RSS when rating a blog.

64

However, since reaching that milestone I’ve been jumping up and down quite a bit with a variance of around 35~ and so I’ve been plateauing in the 800-840 range lately. Hopefully I’ll get past this plateau and continue to increase though.

My new goal is to hit 900 RSS subscribers, and average 850 RSS subscribers so that I can confidently state that my blog has 850 subscribed readers.

RSS Advertising Available

While I’ve had Feedvertising available on my blog for a while now, I haven’t let anyone know about it.

Feedvertising is an RSS advertising program run by TextLinkAds.

With Feedvertising, your RSS ad will appear exclusively on the bottom of 1 out of every 6 posts on my blog within my RSS feed.

My previous price for this was $70 a month, but that was only because TLA priced it at that automatically. I’ve since got them to lower it from $70 to $30, which I feel is reasonable.

If you’re interested in purchasing RSS ads on my blog, you can order them from TLA.

Updated Windows Live Writer

I started using Windows Live Writer 6-weeks ago and fell instantly in love with it.

I still use it today, and in fact am writing in it as we speak. A few days ago I upgraded to Windows Live Writer Beta 3, and the improvements have only further attached me to the software.

There are a lot of new improvements and bug fixes, but here are the ones I care about the most:

  • Insert & Embed Video easily with a new Insert Video feature
  • Justify-align existing post text
  • New Table feature allowing you to enter Excel-style tables, with many customizable options:
    Tyler’s Example Table Sample Column
Blah Blah Blee Blee Blee Blah
All work and no play makes Tyler a dull boy.

  • Better image handling. This is by far my favourite update.. previously, uploaded images were very fuzzy.. probably in an attempt to lower their file size, but now they appear clean and crisp.

Guest Bloggers

I’m still looking for guest bloggers to occasionally submit posts on my blog. I currently have a few guest bloggers on board, but only one has been submitting posts, and I could use some more for when I’m unable to update my blog with a post.

I’m looking for good writers who can write about Internet business, design, or web development and the articles/posts must be written specifically and exclusively for TylerCruz.com.

In return, you’ll have your name attached to each post which can be linked to your own website. This is good for backlinks and a fair bit of exposure (800 RSS subscribers will be reading your posts), plus you’ll help me out :-)

The way it currently works is the guest blogger submits a draft, and when I don’t have time to write a blog post I then publish the draft into a post on the site.

If you’re interested, please contact me with a sample post or two.

WRevenue.com Review

WRevenue.com is a new blog on the scene run by Internet entrepreneur and millionaire Scott Wainner.

The ‘W’ in WRevenue.com plays two roles, both representing Wainner’s last name and making the domain sound like “Double Your Revenue” phonetically.

Who is Scott Wainner?

With more and more “Internet entrepreneur” blogs launching and saturating the market all the time, finding a blogger who has actually experienced great success in the field is becoming rarer by the minute.

I personally only read entrepreneurial blogs where the author knows what they’re talking about and has actually achieved success on their own. Ironically, the majority of blogs that teach and preach how to “make money online” are written by bloggers who aren’t even making much money themselves.

Fortunately, Wainner has more than adequate knowledge to teach others about making money online.

His About page, aptly titled Why Take My Advice, Anyway? gives a good brief history as to his success online. He started his entrepreneurial trek on the Internet way back in 1994, and within a few years was already generating $100,000 from banner ads from just one site.

In 1999 he sold two of his sites for several million dollars, only to buy one of them back later for a fraction of the price.

He now runs the successful sites ResellerRatings.com, Dealighted.com, PhotoPost.com, and TeachIMO.com which rake in well over a million dollars annually.

What Does WRevenue.com Offer?

WRevenue.com is a typical “make money online” Internet entrepreneur blog with posts discussing tips and advice on the matter.

Basically, it’s what you’d expect it to be. However, it’d be a mistake to simply dismiss it as just yet another blog on the scene, here’s why: Scott knows what he’s talking about and gives absolute killer tips.

Since his blog is brand new, he only has 9 posts on his blog so far, but his posts Ten Business Boosting Quick Tips for Site Owners and 10 Steps to a 7 Figure Income From Your Site contain extremely valuable tips and advice.

What I also like about Scott’s blog is that he owns several what I call “regular” websites, and thus has a lot of advice to give on how to monetize and grow “normal” websites.

Many “make money online” blogs out there are focused solely on blogging and not building and administering actual websites. Blogging and launching websites are completely two different things so it’s refreshing to see a blog such as WRevenue.

In addition, Scott reveals and shares his sites, and some of his numbers as well. I do this, and I’ve only heard praise as a result; people want real-world examples and…. almost proof… to show that the advice and tips you are sharing actually have some merit to them.

My Advice to Scott

I always like to give advice in my paid reviews to help the advertiser improve their site.

So here are two quick suggestions for you Scott!

1. Reduce Your Side Column

I’m not sure if your skin is custom made or not, but it appears to be so you should have no problem addressing this.

Your right side column is too wide in my eyes. You have a whole lot of whitespace and there is no need for the side column to take up that much space. Reducing it to… say 50-60% of the width it is now would also give your main content more room to ‘breathe’.
 54

2. Add a Real Contact Page

Currently your blog’s contact page is borrowing the contact page from your vBulletin forum on your ResellerRatings site.

I’m sure you did this as just a temporary measure until you added a contact form on the blog yourself; you probably don’t want to disclose your e-mail publicly.

But since you’re now paying for reviews of your blog, it’s time to replace your makeshift contact page with a real one :-)

You probably just haven’t found a decent one yet, so here I am to the rescue! I use the WordPress Contact Form with Spam Protection which you can see in action on my contact page.

It works great, is an easy install, and the “human logic” spam protection is an added bonus.

Conclusion

WRevenue.com is a new Internet entrepreneur blog on the scene run by a very successful entrepreneur who knows his stuff.

It contains some very good posts and information and I’d definitely recommend checking it out.

Scott - perhaps you’d be interested in taking Movie-Vault.com off my hands? I also have some other sites you might possibly be interested in.

And if you ever want some tips and advice for your forums, give me a shout :)

Order a Paid Review From Me

October 14, 2007
Posted by Tyler Cruz

I haven’t received many offers for paid reviews lately and so I decided to beg for some. After all, I need to try to beat September’s blog earnings.

What is a paid review?

Simply put, for a price of $75, I review your site, service, or product on my blog.

Here are some of the past reviews I’ve written:

(View the full list of past reviews)

I cannot guarantee a positive or favourable review as I wish to remain completely honest and objective as possible. However, if I think that I’ll completely hate your your site, I’ll let you know before accepting the review so that you don’t pay for bad press.

What exactly do I get?

Purchasing a paid review from my blog is a lot different from purchasing one on other blogs.

First, I exhaustively review the site in question before starting to write the review. I then write a very lengthy and comprehensive review of the site, which is usually at least 1,000 words.  Compare this to most other blogs who will only write a few hundred.

I typically spend at least 2-3 hours to review and write a review, but spend sometimes as much as 6-8 depending on the site.

Your review will also remain as the latest and top post on my blog for at least one day, to give maximum exposure.

Take a look at some of the sample reviews linked above to get an idea of what you’d receive.

What are the benefits of a paid review?

Traffic & Exposure

First, you’ll be getting a lengthy review of your site, service, or product on a blog with the stats of:

Monthly Unique Visitors: 15,000
Google Pagerank: 5
RSS Readership: 800
Alexa Ranking: 36,611

Targeted Traffic

In addition, this traffic has added valuable as it is comprised of highly targeted traffic.

The vast majority of readers are entrepreneurs, programmers, designers, developers, businessmen, and technology enthusiasts. Since this blog revolves around earning an income online, readers are often interested in trying out new products and services related to web development or entrepreneurialism.

Conversions

Paid reviews are especially beneficial for advertisers wanting to sell something (as opposed to just getting site traffic). Since the cost of a paid review on my blog is only $75, often it only takes one sale to make your money back, depending on what you’re selling.

For example, let’s say that Advertiser Joe orders a paid review for a nice PHP script he sells. The script is some type of advertisement management program like OpenAds, but even better and offers support and lifetime upgrades. The script sells for $150.

All he needs to do is sell just one from my paid review and he’s made a nice profit.

Let’s say that only 25% of my 800 targeted webmaster-related RSS readers read the paid review closely, which is 200. And out of those 200 webmasters who read it, 1% were interested in the script and decided to buy it, that’s 2 conversions, or $300, netting Advertiser Joe a $225 profit.

SEO

Another benefit to paid reviews are the SEO perks. You’re receiving quality links back to your site on a PR5 webmaster-oriented blog, and within a content-relevant article, making those backlinks valuable.

Branding & Awareness

Lastly, a paid review is very beneficial in terms of branding and awareness. In fact, paid reviews originally stemmed to generate buzz for advertisers throughout the blogosphere.

Even if you do not get direct conversions from the review, you’re still getting your companies name out there, and in the future one of those readers might remember your site or logo and return to your site, or might happen across it again in the future and say “I remember this site… maybe I’ll check it out closer now…”

How do I order a paid review?

Purchasing a paid review from me is easy. I currently accept reviews through PayPerPost Direct, which is an intermediary between blogger and advertiser. Simply click on the Hire Me! button on the top left of my blog and fill out the form.

They will charge you an additional 10% for their service fee, and they only accept credit cards.

If you do not have a credit card, you can order a paid review through me directly by contacting me and paying through PayPal. However, I charge $90 if done directly as I prefer to go through PayPerPost.

So what are you waiting for? Purchase a paid review from me now!

PublisherForums.com Contest Updates

Prizes Update

It’s been less than a week since I started looking for advertisers  to sponsor my upcoming PublisherForums.com contest, yet the results so far have been much better than I had ever expected.

The contest now has $1,760 worth of confirmed prizes, and around $1,000 of unconfirmed prizes. I say unconfirmed because I’m still working out the details with the various sponsors, and some of them are waiting on site revamps and relaunches.

I know some of you are probably interested in a sneak peak of what some of the prizes are, so here’s some of what’s on the plate so far (including unconfirmed prizes):

  • Choice of custom Wordpress Theme or vBulletin Skin
  • Free Subscriptions
  • One-Year Free Hosting Package & Domain Name
  • Featured Review
  • Content Services
  • 3-4 prize packages of $200 cash from an Affiliate Network
  • DVD Box set of your choice
  • Quality Script for Video-Sharing community like YouTube

How does that sound so far? Enough to sway you to participate in the contest?

Sponsor the Contest

The contest will run between 4-6 weeks, and your product/service will be listed on the contest’s page with a link to your site as well.

When Will the Contest Start?

A number of people are starting to show interest in the contest and are eager to get started. As such, a lot of people want to know when it will start.

I don’t have an exact date for the contest yet, as I’m waiting for a number of ‘pending’ sponsors to confirm their sponsorship and to work out the details with me regarding the prizes. Also, some sponsors are currently waiting for a redesign or new site launch.

However, I’d like to start the contest no later than two weeks from now, preferably sooner. Therefore, it should be roughly around 6-10 days from now.

Although the longer you have to wait for the contest, the more prizes there will be to win :-)

But don’t feel that you have to wait for the contest to start posting on PublisherForums.com… maybe I’ll even reward those who get the discussion started again before the contest starts somehow… ;)
