Description: The Flag is found at -- http://www.ameliamuseum.org/default.aspx?page=french%20flag -- which has a lot more information about the French settlement in Florida. The first children born in the New World of European parents were born at FortCaroline. This will come as a surprise to some visitors who have been taught that the first child was Virginia Dare in Jamestown. The first French child pre-dates Virginia by about 50 years ... But this early settlement would not turn out to be the first permanent European colony in the New World. That distinction would come later to the Spanish colony at St. Augustine. -- The Huguenots desired religious freedom and sought opportunities in this distant land under the French flag. The
