One minute of silence to be observed
throughout Singapore
SCDF will sound alert |
As a mark of respect for those who perished in the
Tsunami Disaster, there will be a national minute of silence on 9 January 2005
at about 6 pm, at the end of the Tsunami Disaster Memorial Service. |
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will
sound an alert (i.e. Chime signal) through its Public Warning System to mark
the start of the minute of silence. Members of the public should stop whatever
they are doing, where practical, and join in this observance. SCDF will sound
another alert (Chime signal) to mark the end of the one-minute silence. |
National Flag at half mast |
Also as a mark of respect for those who perished
in the Tsunami Disaster, the national flag will be flown at half mast on
Sunday, 9 January 2005. |
Memorial Service |
The Tsunami Disaster Memorial Service which will
be held at the Singapore Expo Hall 2 is open to all members of the public. |
The Memorial Service will be an occasion for us to
come together as a nation to remember the victims of the tsunami disaster both
in Singapore and across the world, and to pray for the recovery of the injured
and the safe return of those who are still missing or unaccounted for.
Singapore stands in solidarity with all the countries that have been gravely
affected by the disaster. |
Details of the Tsunami
Disaster Memorial Service |
Date: Sunday, 9 January 2005
Time: 5 pm to 6 pm
Venue: Singapore EXPO Hall 2 |
Public Invited |
The Memorial Service will begin at 5 pm and end at
6 pm. Members of the public attending the Service are requested to dress in
decorum. To facilitate smooth security clearance, they should arrive by 4.00
pm. The Police advises against bringing bags to the Service. |
If the turnout exceeds the capacity of Hall 2,
there will be ushers to guide participants to another Hall nearby to follow
the Service via direct telecast on huge screens that will be set up. |
Order of Proceedings |
The Prime Minister of Singapore will make an
address at the Memorial Service. High Commissioners and Ambassadors of some of
the affected countries (Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and Sweden) will
also be making addresses. |
Religious leaders from the Inter-Religious
Organisation (IRO) will be reciting prayers at the Memorial Service. The nine
religious groups participating in the Service represent Hinduism, Judaism,
Zoroastrian Religion, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and
Baha’i faith. |
Each religious leader will say a one-minute prayer
for the victims of the tsunami disaster, for the speedy recovery of those
injured and for the safe return of those who are still missing. |
The Service will end with a minute of silence. |
“Live” TV and radio broadcast |
The Memorial Service will be carried 'LIVE' on
Channel NewsAsia Singapore, Channel NewsAsia International, TV Mobile and News
Radio 93.8. |
The broadcast will be in English. The "LIVE"
telecast on TV will commence at 1645 hrs and end at 1800 hrs. The "LIVE"
broadcast on News Radio 93.8 will commence at 1655 hrs and end at 1800 hrs. |
The “LIVE” broadcast of the Memorial Service will
be screened in Little India at the grass patch at the junction of Weld Road
and Jalan Besar Road. Takashimaya Shopping Centre has graciously agreed to
screen the direct telecast at Takashimaya Square at its Basement. |
The direct telecast will also be screened at the
electronic billboard in front of Orchard Emerald Building. Members of public
can follow the Service at these locations. |
Flowers |
For those who bring flowers to the Memorial
Service, an area for the laying of flowers has been specially designated at
the Singapore Expo. There will be signs to direct people to the area. |
Transport to the Service |
Members of the public are advised to use public
transport to get to the Singapore Expo as there are limited parking
facilities. For those coming by the MRT, please alight at the Expo Station on
the East-West Line. There are taxi stands and bus stops for those coming by
public transport. Please see map attached. |
Those intending to drive are advised to car pool
to help minimize traffic congestion. They are advised to follow the
instructions of the traffic wardens at the venue. |
