the guiltiest of pleasures, May 28, 2002
While Fever is the album that has finally broken Kylie in North America, this previous set is in fact a far more infectious, highly camp and totally satisfying FUN album. Light Years combines all of the best elements of 70s disco-pop wrapped up in state of the art production, lyrics that are disposable (without being insulting), irresistible beats and a completely winning sense of humour. Imagine the perfect soundtrack to a cocktail/disco/pool party and you have it. I still return to this album when getting ready for a night on the town - there's none better.

Kylie's big comeback, March 19, 2005
If "Fever" was Kylie's comeback album in North America, "Light Years" was her comeback album in the rest of the world.
A lighter, more European-feeling, and more whimsical outing, this CD was my re-introduction to the Aussie ingenue. Sure, I had heard that she was still making music, and I think rumors of the "Impossible Princess" album's existence had reached my ears a time or two, but for all practical purposes Kylie had been absent from my mind (and the Canadian charts) since the glory days of 1988, when "The Locomotion" received heavy rotational airplay. When I noticed the striking cover of Light Years at the record store, I decided on the spur of the moment to pick the CD up.
Needless to say, I was not disappointed. "Light Years" is a great album. In fact, after listening to its tracks several times, I found myself mentally wondering why Kylie wasn't popular anymore. The songs on "Light Years" sounded like hits (and, in fact, there were several huge international chart-toppers on the disc, including "On A Night Like This" and "Spinning Around"). When "Fever" appeared two years later and caught on in the USA and Canada, it was a validation of the stylistic directions Kylie had moved in on Light Years.
Basically, if you enjoy light, disco-suffused dance and pop, "Light Years" is right up your alley. There's only one truly bad song on the CD, the ill-advised duet with Robbie Williams, "Kids".
This CD will impress you - take it to the bank. Five stars!

Your Disco Needs You, October 31, 2000
Kylie Minogue is indisputably the disco queen of the 21st century, sort of a cross of Olivia Newton John's "Physical" (and not just because they're both Australian) and ABBA. This album is chock full of terrific dance beats, totally cheesy (even laughable) lyrics and an all around great listen. Some highlights: "Spinning Around", "Disco Down", "Your Disco Needs You" (written by Robbie Williams with a chorus that's straight out of Village People), "Loveboat", "Kids" (a fabulous duet with Robbie Williams that also appears on his latest album), "Butterfly", and "Light Years". Kylie's music hearkens back to a lighter, brighter musical era. There aren't any profound statements here, just great fun. She's a pop icon in Europe but has never really caught on in the States. Let's hope she catches on with this album.
