Meet the Doctors & Staff

Dr. Jacob Kornberg, MD, FACS

drkornberg.jpgDr. Jacob “Jack” Kornberg obtained his undergraduate degree from University of California at Los Angeles and graduated from University of California, Irvine College of Medicine in 1969. After completing an internship at Los Angeles County Medical Center, he returned to the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine and finished his four year surgical residency 1974. He then served two years as a surgeon in the United States Navy at Corpus Christi Texas Naval Medical Center. He and his family then moved to Puyallup, Washington where he created a successful general surgery practice. He became certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1975 and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1976. During his practice of surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital he served as chairman of the Surgical Committee for many years and was elected president of the medical staff.

He took additional training in natural and functional medicine and started to incorporate holistic medicine principles into his surgical practice in 2000. After retiring from practicing general surgery in Dec. 2003, he founded and is the director of the Center for Health Awareness in Federal Way, Washington. This functional medicine clinic provides support for therapeutic lifestyle changes by nurturing healing of the whole person. Dr. Kornberg lectures across the country and internationally on various aspects of health and lifestyle changes that will encourage healing and healthy aging. He is a clinical consultant to Metagenics, Inc. in Gig Harbor, Washington and is a certified FirstLine Therapy practitioner.  From his many years of surgical experience, Dr. Kornberg takes a unique perspective that he applies to his holistic approach to wellness.



Dr. Kathleen Jade, ND

drjade.jpgDr. Kathleen Jade is a licensed naturopathic physician offering a holistic approach to wellness. She blends the best of clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, nutraceuticals, and lifestyle counseling with extensive training in science-based natural medicine. Dr. Jade’s philosophy of care centers on time, compassion, expertise and research. She offers you time to listen to your concerns; compassion in understanding how illness affects you; and expertise in developing a personalized wellness plan that is based on the best research in the field of science-based natural medicine. It is through her deep commitment to understanding your unique set of health concerns that she creates wellness programs that are personal, realistic and effective.


Kathleen Jade, N.D. completed her pre-medical studies at the University of Washington and Seattle University. She then received her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington, the leading center of natural health education and research. At Bastyr, she was educated in the same basic sciences as an M.D. but also studied holistic and nontoxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness. In addition to a standard medical curriculum that included training in diagnosis, lab testing, pharmacology, and minor surgery, she was required to also complete training in clinical nutrition, environmental medicine, detoxification, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, and lifestyle counseling (to encourage people to make lifestyle changes in support of their personal health.)


Dr. Jade is a certified FirstLine Therapy practitioner. FirstLine Therapy is a clinically proven program based on “therapeutic lifestyle changes”. Therapeutic lifestyle changes are recommended as the “first line” of treatment of a variety of health conditions, including obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and insulin resistance. She is also certified in the use of Frequency Specific Microcurrent for pain reduction.


Peggy Kornberg
, RN

Patient Educator
Peggy Kornberg, RN graduated from nursing school in Minneapolis in 1965. She worked mostly in post-operative areas, in ICU/CCU and also in the emergency room at LA County hospital. She has been working in Dr. Kornberg’s office since 1976. She is a certified First Line Therapy lifestyle educator, and continues to pursue a life-long interest in exercise, nutrition and food preparation. Her passion is making nutritious food taste great. She enjoys working with patients on making healthy life-style choices and changes.

Diane Smith
Patient Accounts and Patient Care Coordinator
Diane has lived her whole life in the Pacific Northwest.  Her early training was in accounting and she worked for a Genetic research company that came out with the first viable AIDS test, and then Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  In 1994 she completed her training in Massage therapy and had a deep-tissue massage practice in Kent Washington until 2002.  Because of her passion for helping others she went into the customer service field.   Diane came to Center for Health Awareness in 2003. 


Today she is working at Center for Health Awareness due to the first hand healing she received.  She continues to incorporate the supportive lifestyle changes that enabled her to live a more joyful and fulfilling life.


Mark Duhamel, M.S., L.Ac.
Mark Duhamel is a Licensed Acupuncturist in Washington State, and holds a Master of Science Degree in Oriental Medicine. Mark is an NCCAOM Diplomate in Acupuncture and Asian Bodywork, and an AOBTA Certified Instructor of Shiatsu-Anma (acupressure). His treatment methods typically combine manual manipulation like Shiatsu-anma,  and needle and/or laser "acupuncture",  Qigong breathing and movement exercises, and may also include lifestyle and nutritional modifications, and herbal medicine.  


Caitlin Cochrane

Caitlin Cochrane has certification as a Master Neurofeedback Clinician.  She received her training in Neurofeedbak Training from Valdeane Broqn Ph.D. and Susan Cheshsire Brown Ph.D. through Zengar Institute and has completed a 2-year internship in a private practice.


Karen Cochrane, M.Ed.,
Has an extensive background in clinical and educational psychology, counseling and human development.  She has worked with children, adolescents and adults since 1981 as a consultant, counselor and therapist in the private sector and in community mental health.  She is a Washington State Licensed Mental Health Counselor.  She is also a Master Certified Neurofeedback Clinician.  Karen is currently working toward her PhD through the International University for Graduate Studies.
