PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brown sophomore goalie Steffi Yellin (Savannah, Ga.)
helped lead the Bears to its first Ivy win of the season with an extraordinary
performance in net, stopping all 10 shots she faced, including seven in
the second half as Brown was outshot 24-8 for the game and 16-2 in the
second half. The 5'4 Yellin made several diving saves and several on high
shots from outside where she jumped up and deflected the ball over the
crossbar. Her performance helped to snap Harvard's three-game winning
streak, hand the Crimson their first home loss of the season, while also
shutting them out for the first time this year.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Princeton freshman defender Marissa Sampias (Centennial,
Colo.) became the eleventh Tiger to find the back of the net this year,
knocking home Princeton's second goal in a 2-0 win over defending Ivy
League champions Columbia Saturday. Princeton improved to 3-0 in the Ivy
League with the victory and extended its win streak to six games.
THE HONOR ROLL
Columbia junior forward Allison Leonard (Seattle, Wash.)
scored the tying goal in the 84th minute in the Lions' 2-2 draw against
Marist on Monday. It was the second time this season that Leonard had
scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation to bring Columbia even. Last
month against St. John's, Leonard scored in the 89th minute as the two
teams played to a 1-1 tie.
Dartmouth sophomore Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.)
scored her first collegiate goal in the Big Green's 1-1 double overtime
tie with Boston University on Monday. With Dartmouth trailing 1-0, Quick
made a nice run into the box and slid the ball past the far post in the
56th minute to tie the game for good. It was a fitting scene for Quick's
first goal - as a freshman last season, she recorded the assist on the
game-winning goal againt then thirteenth-ranked BU.
Harvard junior forward/midfielder Erin Wylie (Pleasnton,
Calif.) scored the game-winner Wednesday against Vermont. Wylie took a
throw-in pass from freshman Kerry Kartsonis and got by her defenders to
score the goal. The strike was her first of the season.
Penn sophomore midfielder Jess Rothenheber (Chalfont,
Pa.) assisted the Quaker's first goal and then scored the match-winner
in Penn's 2-1 win against Dartmouth Saturday night. With the win, Penn
improved to 3-0-0 in Ivy League play for just the second time in program
history (the other time was 2004). Rothenheber’s assist was her
seventh of the season, which leads the Ivy League (at least she did last
week) and is tied for third on Penn’s single-season list. The goal
was her fifth of the season, and she now has 17 points for the campaign.
Princeton senior midfielder Diana Matheson (Oakville,
Ont.) added three points in the Tiger's only game of the week, a 2-0 win
over Columbia that lifted them to 3-0 in the Ivy League season. Matheson
scored Princeton's first goal on a penalty kick and had an assist on the
second goal. Matheson now has 12 points in Princeton's last three games.
Yale junior forward Emma Whitfield (Bow, Wash.) celebrated
her birthday in style on Saturday night against Cornell, scoring and adding
an assist as the Bulldogs cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Big Red. She
set up Yale's first goal, just 7:17 in, when she sent a cross to the left
side of the box that Mary Kuder banged in. Whitfield's goal came early
in the second half and gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. She settled a centering
pass and knocked in a shot from 10 yards out. Whitfield, a first team
All-Ivy selection last year, has been battling an injury throughout the
season but appears getting back into form.
Penn sophomore forward Jessica Fuccello
(Bricktown, N.J.) scored the Quaker's first goal Saturday versus Dartmouth,
her team and Ivy-leading eighth of the season. Only a sophomore, Fuccello
has 17 career goals, which places her ninth on Penn’s all-time list.
