Fires were always a danger. Over 100 buildings were destroyed on October 12, 1871. Most of the buildings in Windsor had been made of wood. The fire started in McGregor's livery stable (on the corner of Ouellette and Pitt St.). It swept through the town, even though fire fighters from Detroit came across the river to help.

Many people re-built their buildings out of brick, to help stop another big fire from happening.
