Good grief...

The upshot of yesterday's meeting with Imagi is that while Imagi remains interested in doing a sequel, certain bugs in the distribution and marketing system have to be worked out with Warner Brothers before a green light can be given. Mirage has therefore granted Imagi an extension of several more months to arrive at a conclusive decision, and a follow-up meeting has been scheduled for a month from now....

Fingers crossed this will happen. I mean, the film turned a profit right Steve? What do they want? Another idea is why doesn't Pete do some direct to video movies like other properties have done? He's loaded with money and then Mirage could have complete creative control and everything would be pure Mirage and way better then having Warner Bros stick their noses in and screw things up. The TMNT dvd sales are good aren't they?

I'd much rather watch a Mirage movie/cartoon that
had no interference from anyone. You could write it, the artists could storyboard and do design work and ship it to hong kong to get animated. Piece of cake!

Also:

The film was indeed profitable, not hugely profitable but nonetheless profitable.

I think we can all agree that Warner Brothers completely dropped the ball in terms of marketing... from pre-release film publicity straight through to choice of cover art for the DVD.

Perhaps now you can get an idea of what sort of problems need to be ironed out....

I saw it in theaters, and took my one year old with me, but I almost didn't. We only got dubbed copies down here. Warner has this stupid habit of releasing only dubbed copies for what they believe are "kid movies". And I heard a lot of people saying they wanted to check it out, but decided to wait for the DVD rental when they found out we'd only get dubbed copies.

Eastman and Laird self-published in the beginning and they lucked out and it worked so now they should self-produce TMNT movies and stuff. Their strategy was a proven success. Peter is far beyond rich, being a multi-millionaire and all, put it back into what got you there. How much money does one person need? (or segways) Spread it around, make some great direct to dvd movies, comics etc. Don't let Warner Bros tell you what to do.

I'd much rather buy a Peter-produced TMNT movie or cartoon on dvd and watch it at home.

Well, considering the STELLAR job WB did with the film...

I still hold out hope for the sequel.

Nothig worse than a dubbed film, rad rock. Sorry to hear.

-->> ..it's at least a relief that the cards are still on the table..

..sequels or shmequels..prequels or equals..

..the fourth film itself made me come full circle to coming back to a very good place in my heart.

If hope of a sequel is still in there..cool by me.. even if we have to wait even longer. WB's promotion wasn't that bad.. and this day and age they've a lot of ground to cover.. WB alone had to create at last a minimum of 7 that i was aware diff' Myspace pages just to promo the film ..for example. We've been in contact with their promo people and they had provided us with multi-media web content, contest material and prizes to help boost the movie along. Ect.Ect.Ect. ..

Naw maybe it ain' perfect.. but it was ok considering
..and it' been alot of fun in '07.

As the years have gone by .. i felt continually alienated from the fandom.. and very much hated by my peers. There was a tipping point late last year ,early this year where it was like i was totally burned and hurt by all this stuff.

This year has proven exceptionally challenging in other ways and tons of people i know..ridden with a constant and growing darkness, loss of loved ones, and sadly alot of death.

But if i can lick m'wounds and try to find a bright spot here..even if it's rooted in an Icon that had served at one point ..pure and simple a source of undying inspiration. Was tainted for awhile.. but i didn't give up on TMNT ..

I got alot of that back this year, what made Turtles and Mirage pure and whole in my eyes and heart so. And there's been alot of close.. close FREEKIN' CLOSE calls this year.. like alot of stuff Mirage did for me over the past 20 years or so ..
this film saved me in alot of ways.. if not my life.
Whatever that attests to.
They are gonna hate me .. and more challenges lie ahead.

TMNT and Mirage equate to me Endurence ..so maybe that's rubbed off a bit on me. I hope.

Was told by a friend that i couldn't be a creator or writer if i was also a fan at the same time.
I think me maintaining on staying an artist has prolly DEPENDED on in some cases me staying a fan.

..and if that sequel or whatever still is potential.. kinda keeps that hope alive. Hope i think we all need.

..so ..

I hope that things work out so we can get a sequel if not,I think a direct to dvd movie or series would be a good idea. Personally I would love to see Mirage work with an anime company to make direct adaption of all the original TMNT comics in a animated series of dvds. Don't get me wrong I love the 2003 series but how cool would it be to see the turtles in their true form. Such as cussing, drinking beer and seeing them go all out when the fights break out and hopefully there would be no more holding Mikey back. Make the series much darker in tone etc... Just a idea please feel free to pass that along to Peter. Oh yeah and first and foremost Mirage would have complete control over the project. I would buy it I a heart beat.

I suppose if nothing come along for a theatrical sequel, I suppose a direct-to-DVD movie would be the best option.

Now, I may be in the minority here, and although I really liked TMNT, my biggest complaint would be that it kinda started another path for the characters. I mean, ok, it sorta follows the movie trilogy. But after the awesome run we had on the 2K3 series, it'd be incredible if the movie had followed that design, voice actors and all. After so many years listening to Casey and April, to suddenly hear the Human Torch and Buffy instead was a bit weird. Of course, since we never properly had the comics down here in Brazil, I got to know the Turtles, like most people I suppose, through the classic series. So the 2K3 was strange at first, but quickly gathered my support as a worthy follower, actually surpassing my love for the old one. That said, from what little I've read of the comics... I think I'll still stick to the 2K3 incarnation. :)

Ah, this all makes a bit of sense. Why invest the time and energy of your company into a movie that isn't going to be given the proper support to have a chance to be more than marginally successful?

I'll go back to what I said in the last post, that I think Mirage could put a little effort into general TMNT marketing, specifically for the older audiences, to help out any future film endeavors (and everything else in general, really). I mean, as much as WB screwed up, what exists to prove to them (or anyone else) that TMNT can be taken seriously? All of the comics that Kevin M. & Co. repeatedly make mention to are out of print. The only market presence that any executive is going to see is in action figures and pajamas.

I cannot support more adaptations, of any kind, of the original comic books. Come on, prove to me that these characters exist beyond those. That's what I know I'm starved for. While the movie had its flaws, I really appreciate that it's a 100% new story. And even with its flaws and PG rating, to me it's a better representation of the TMNT characters I love than what 4Kids is now offering and what we've seen in Vol. 4 (Tales remains hit and miss with me, but because of the one-shot nature, even the hits aren't as fulfilling as they should be).

Meh.. I dunno. Whatever comes to be, I just hope it's made to be a real step forward.

You know it's funny Murph that you say that about Warner marketing and promiting the movie I said the same thing on my myspace about how they did shit to advertise and hype it up.
Then of course a friend of mine who works for Warner went Ape shit on me saying what a great job they did and they worked very hard to promotre my beloved TMNT.
All I could do was roll my eyes and delete his mail. oi!
I could do a better job with my photoshop skills and a printer going about town as a town cryer telling people about the movie haha.

I don't care about the Imagi TMNT status. I didn't like the first one they did. I want live action, maybe it'll happen in 20 years, I can wait.

Anyway, I just wanted to drop by and say how awesome it is you do this blog. Before this all we had was speculation with blame getting place all in the wrong places. Now I hear it's 4kids who is responsible for the retro turtles push? That's awesome. I still hate 4kids but they get some props for that.

With all this talk about Imagi, Mirage and WB... It makes me wonder why Peter doesn't just put his foot(no pun intended) down and choose the best option. Imagi did their job superbly, and if Peter spent some of his fortune as some have mentioned before, Mirage would have total control.

It makes me wonder if Peter even cares about the TMNT anymore, or if it's just about the coin.

Alex "Toon" Deligiannis said...

I've wondered that many a time myself, Yosef. Considering the origins of the characters and the crazy, out-of-control success that came so unexpectedly, I sometimes fear that it's the latter. I was introduced to the TMNT in 1987 or 88, at the ripe old age of 9, and I knew there was nothing else I wanted to do in life but draw and create characters. Today, as a result of them, I'm an artist working in comics and animation, and it'd be a real heartbreak to think that these characters mean more to me and fans like me than they actually do to Pete.

I'm digressing. Hope these kinks get ironed out. Thank you, as usual, for the updates, Murphy. I just had dental surgery a few hours ago, so I think I'm gonna go pop in the original 1989 film and make my world a better place for a couple hours.

Yosef said...

Yeah Alex, I'm totally in the same boat... I've always loved to draw and such, but it was initially the turtles (I was around 7 or 8) that made me really want to illustrate and animate for a living.

I really wonder if back with Kevin owned half the rights, if it was the 2 of them keeping each other in line.

For the record: I didn't say that 4Kids was responsible for the retro program. I said that 4Kids is responsible for carrying out the wishes (ie trying to sign on licensees) of the two-headed beast that is Mirage Licensing and 4Kids. It is ML and 4K that together developed a retro program. It is 4K's job to carry it out to the best of their ability. ML oversees the program, approves/disapproves retro submissions, and meets with 4K on a regular basis to massage the retro program along (same way as its done with the 2K3 and movie licensing programs).

Well, here's hoping. And while I'd love to see a City At War story in the theater, I can agree with Roseangelo on expanding the universe... so long as the story is solid. TMNT 2007 was OK in this respect, but there is so much untapped potential in the franchise. I'd also like to see it take the form of a more urban story, with a little less fantasy (main characters excepted, of course). The scifi and everything is fun, but I feel like there's been an overload of it lately, especially with Fast Forward and the monster stuff of the most recent movie.

But I guess that's in the hands of the suits, right? I'll keep hoping. :)
