Hospital Services The RBWH is a tertiary referral teaching hospital, providing services to patients throughout the State, Northern New South Wales and the Northern Territory, incorporating all major health specialties including medicine, surgery, psychiatry, oncology, women's and newborn services, trauma services and more than 30 subspecialties: - ICU capacity is 18 beds and HDU capacity is 8 beds weekdays and 4 beds weekends. - Surgical subspecialties include: Burns, ENT, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Oral and Maxillofacial, Orthopaedic, Plastics & Reconstructive, Vascular, Thoracic and Urology. - Medical subspecialties include: Cardiology, Clinical Immunology & Allergies, Endocrinology; Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Dermatology, Geriatric Medicine; Infectious Diseases; Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pharmacy & Clinical Pharmacology, Nuclear Medicine, Renal Medicine, Rheumatology, Thoracic Medicine, Palliative Care Services - Women's and Newborn Services include: Gynaecology, Maternity Services, Neonatology, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Special Care Nursery (SCN), Foetal Diagnosis and Treatment, Breast Health, Maternal Foetal Medicine, Gynaecological Oncology and Retrieval Service for Northern NSW and Pacific Rim. - Cancer Care subspecialties include: Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant / Haematology. - Critical Care Services include: Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine and the Multidisciplinary Pain Centre. - Mental Health Services include: Adolescent Psychiatry, Alcohol and Drug Services, Community Forensic Mental Health Services, Geriatric Psychiatry, Herston Mental Health Services, and Inner North Brisbane Mental Health Service. - The district also provides services off campus, which are located in the Central Area Health Service, including Mental Health, Halwyn Centre, GARU for geriatric assessment and the Oral Health Service.



Capital Works or Recent Improvements:

Block 7 Redevelopment - The redevelopment of an existing building on the site for another life cycle for: - Qld Health Pathology Services - Information Directorate & Corporate Office - RBWH District Support Services

Current Status: Building works finalised - building to be named the Sir Raphael Cilento Building. Gross Project Cost: $75M

Lady Lamington Project - Repair and reuse of Lady Lamington Nursing Home Current Status: Feasibility report submitted Expected completion: TBA Gross Project Cost: Init estimate $40M. Funding to date: $1M for enabling works

Block 8 Redevelopment The redevelopment of an existing building on the site for another life cycle for the following: - Centre for Clinical Nursing - QUT Faculty of Health - Qld Health Anatomical Pathology Professorial Unit & Pathology and Scientific Services Directorate - Qld Health Corporate Office & Shared Services - RBWH Multimedia Unit Current Status: Awaiting approval and funding allocation. Expected Completion: Under review Gross Project Cost: Init. Est. $27.5M

Centre For Clinical Research - This project, a 7 level 10,000 square metre building to be sited between Block 7 and the Education Centre, is a University of Queensland and Queensland Government Smart State initiative. Queensland Health has provided the site and the RBWH will provide, via a commercial arrangement, agreed services to the building and tenants. Current Status: Schematic Design under way Expected Completion: Dec. 2007 Gross Proiect Cost: $60M comprised of $20M each from CRC Benefaction, AIBN-State and The University of Queensland.

Statewide PET Service incorporating Cyclotron The installation of a PET Scanner and Cyclotron at RBWH will provide a statewide imaging service which will lead to the early diagnosis and improved management of cancer, cardiovascular and neurological conditions. Current Status Commissioning underway Gross Proiect Cost $2.5M from Cancer Care Election Commitment Funds

Geographic Description of the District’s Administrative Area:

The Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital shares the Herston Hospitals campus with the Royal Children's Hospital.

 

The majority of patients (about 65%) are drawn from within 15 kilometres of the hospital. The 1996 Census of Population and Housing indicated the population of the area served was 481257. The estimated population of the area served to 2006 is 548574. There are 202,795 women in this population who are over 15 years of age and 118,494 who are aged between 15 years and 44 years.
