Commuting Alternatives

Try IndyGo (Indianapolis Public Transportation)

Fixed Route Service for commuters:

Beginning Monday, March 5, IndyGo will provide two express bus trips on Route 8 Washington Street from Washington Square Mall to downtown Indianapolis. This service will run Monday through Friday throughout the project’s duration, and will cost $1.50 per ride, $3.50 per day or $55.00 for a month pass, identical to IndyGo’s regular fares.

IndyGo has also added temporary stops in Lawrence along Routes 2 and 4 to serve Northeast Side residents looking for transit alternatives during I-70 construction.

The Washington Street express service features:

Bus service from Washington Square to downtown:

  • Morning service at 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.
  • Pick up: Shelter at Washington Square Mall - off of Washington Street behind the Golden Corral and near Target
  • Drop off: Along Ohio Street at Pennsylvania, Meridian, Illinois, Capitol and Senate

Bus service from downtown to Washington Square:

  • Afternoon service at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Pick up: Along Ohio Street at Pennsylvania, Meridian, Illinois, Capitol and Senate
  • Notice the Super 70 signage in the shelters and on the buses (Super 70 express)

Bus service in Lawrence:

In the City of Lawrence, IndyGo has placed temporary bus stops along Route 2 - E. 34th Street and 4 - Fort Harrison as a convenience for residents.

The temporary bus stops in Lawrence for Routes 2 and 4 (in addition to each route’s regular bus stops) are:

  • 56th & Edlou Place (eastbound)
  • 56th & Boy Scout Road (eastbound)
  • 56th & Herbert Lord Road (eastbound)
  • 56th & Herbert Lord Road (westbound)
  • 56th & Boy Scout Road (westbound)
  • 56th & Richardt Avenue (westbound)
  • Temporary bus stop signs will be placed along the routes

More than half of IndyGo’s Fixed Route Service extends from the east and northeast suburbs to Downtown Indianapolis with convenient stops along the way. Riding IndyGo is an alternative to congestion on I-70, in addition to offering access to areas and neighborhoods within the construction zone. Frequency during rush hour ranges from 15-30 minutes. Some of these routes include:

  • Route 8 – a crosstown route starting from Meijer on East Washington Street to Downtown (Adobe pdf file)
  • Route 10 – a crosstown route starting from Washington Square Mall, then to 10th Street to Downtown (Adobe pdf file)
    Route 19 – from Castleton Square Mall to Glendale, to Downtown (Adobe pdf file)

There are several ways to plan your trip on IndyGo:

  • Call 317-635.3344 to speak to a Customer Service Representative for step-by-step assistance.
  • Visit www.IndyGo.net for trip planning hints, access to the complete System Map and all individual route maps.
  • Stop by the Customer Service Center located in the Indianapolis City Market.

Save money when you ride IndyGo:

In addition to easing commuting stress, riding IndyGo will save you money on fuel, parking and vehicle wear and tear:

  • Single Ride (one trip) - $1.50
  • Day Pass (unlimited rides in one day) - $3.50
  • 7-Day Pass (unlimited rides over 7 consecutive days) - $17.00
  • 31-Day Pass (unlimited rides over 31 consecutive days) - $55.00

You can use exact fare for Single Rides and Day Passes on the bus or you may purchase fare passes in advance by phone at 317-635-3344, online at www.IndyGo.net or in person at the Customer Service Center located in the Indianapolis City Market.

If you work or go to school at IUPUI, you may purchase fare passes at both Campus Card Services locations. If you work at the Indiana Government Center, you may purchase fare passes at the DNR Customer Service Center located in the State Government Center South.

More Commuting Options with CICS (Central Indiana Commuter Services)

Central Indiana Commuter Services, an IndyGo service, is a federally funded program designed to reduce traffic congestion. CICS provides cost-saving commuting solutions for area commuters and their employers. While I-70 will be open to commuters, reducing single occupancy cars will have a positive effect on rush hour traffic. CICS can provide valuable information and assistance regarding:

  • Trying a carpool with two or more passengers per vehicle
  • Starting a vanpool for 7-15 passengers
  • Realizing the benefits of riding IndyGo buses

Getting started with the help of CICS:

The first step in learning more about shared-ride commuting is visiting www.327ride.net:

  • Register your commuter profile to receive a list of potential carpool partners or vanpool opportunities
  • Find out if your employer is registered in the CICS program. If your employer is registered as a participating employer, you can be eligible for more commuter benefits

Special Vanpooling Opportunity during Super 70 construction:

CICS has developed a turnkey process for those interested in vanpooling. From securing the van to determining monthly charges, CICS representatives can help you get started. During the months of February to December of 2007, CICS is offering a discount up to $50/month per person for new vanpools originating on the eastside of our region and commute through the construction area of I 70. A minimum of 6 people is needed to start a vanpool. To qualify for the subsidy a person must ride at least 3 times a week.   • Emergency Ride Home (ERH) Program: ERC is a free taxi service in case you have an emergency during the day and need transportation to your home or another destination.

  • Subsidies for your bus or vanpool fare.
  • Preferential parking for carpoolers.
