Some eight per cent of the Borough's population is of Asian origin, with a majority having links with Pakistan. In 1988 a twinning arrangement was agreed between Rochdale and Sahiwal, in north-east Pakistan, 100 miles south-west of Lahore.

In 1992 twinning links were formed with Lviv in south-west Ukraine. In addition, Rochdale supports friendship links with Avellino (Italy), Kabernet (Kenya) and Riga (Latvia).
