MSU Gallery of Chemists' Photo-Portraits and Mini-Biographies

Appendix 4
Acknowledgments

Many people helped make this project work, and I am grateful to each of them.

I thank those chemists who were willing to be included, and who responded to my request by sending me a photo and/or negative, together with biographical material. Friends at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (Mary Ellen Bowden, Marjorie Gapp and O. T. Benfey) helped to locate certain older portraits. Professor Jack Roberts (Caltech) became interested and supplied several informal photos from his extensive personal collection. Professor Paul Fanta (I.I.T.) heard about the project and contributed some of his Wilkens-Anderson Co. slide collection of historic chemists.

Here at MSU two chemistry department chairs, Professors Gerald T. Babcock and Katharine C. Hunt, gave not only moral support but financial as well, contributing department funds to initial costs connected with making enlargements and framing. I am grateful that they met expenses not yet recovered by donations.

Thanks to Bill Hankins and the staff at his East Lansing gallery, Prints Ancient and Modern, for advice on framing and mounting the portraits.

Special thanks to my invaluable secretary, Nancy Lavrik, without whom this could not have been done, and to Bill Draper, who scanned the photos and assembled all the material required for this booklet, in a form suitable for the printers.
