What's Eating Us?

This Week: The singer and the topic do not match.

We've seen it time and time again: artists singing about things that couldn't possibly have anything to do with their lives as far as age is concerned. We know that a lot of artists don't write their own lyrics but does it have to be so obvious? JoJo vented about her breakup and kicking her man out after he cheated on her. She was fourteen.

Which brings me to Fergie's latest single, 'Big Girls Don't Cry.' The song's a bit slower, giving her a chance to showcase her voice. She's trying to get over heartbreak in the most adult way possible. That is until she sings, "I'm not gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket." Fergie's in her Thirties. 'Nuff said.

Fergie, you're hot! You know it and we know it. But you're a "big girl." You don't need a blanket.

This Week's Lesson: Act your age -- you just look silly otherwise.

This Week: Excessive use of a word or phrase in a song.

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Remember how much this used to annoy your parents? That's what comes to this editor's mind when artists go out of their way to use a word over and over in a single song.

This brings us to the number 78 and why I will forever hate the number 78. Seventy-eight is the number of times that Hurricane Chris raps "a bay bay" in his song of (go figure) the same name. In just over four minutes, 78 different instances of "a bay bay." I counted.

In the early 2000s, Destiny's Child managed to pop out this string of hits: 'No, No, No,' 'Jumpin, Jumpin' and 'Bills, Bills, Bills.' Even their song 'Say My Name' repeats the title phrase 37 times over four minutes.

What's Eating Us?

What's Eating Us? is a new column where your PopEater editors sound off on our pop pet peeves. Each week we'll tackle a new topic in the wonderful world of music.

This Week: Bad Acting in Music Videos

Far too often, when musicians attempt to break into the world of movies and TV the results are disastrous. Case in point: Britney Spears' ill-fated attempt at acting in 'Crossroads.' Fortunately, these side-projects are easily avoidable -- usually a wise handler smacks some sense into the star. The real problem arises when musicians feel the need to showcase their "acting skills" in their music videos.

I'd been loving Lil' Mama's 'Lip Gloss' until I saw the video. The song is "poppin'," the dancing is hot, and, damn, that girl can really rhyme! But what the heck was she thinking with the ridiculous storyline about a tube of magic lip gloss?
