Mahmoud is an award-winning filmmaker and writer from Beirut, Lebanon. Grandson to one of Umm Kulthoum’s violinists, Mahmoud was nurtured in a rich artistic household. By his 18th birthday, he had completed five short films, winning himself a partial scholarship at the prestigious Mel Oppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal. Upon graduating in Film Production he went on to intern at the National Film Board of Canada in documentary filmmaking and work as the personal researcher of the Evening News anchor in Montreal.

After 9/11, Mahmoud had the unique idea of documenting the lives of men called ‘Osama’ as a way of investigating the status of the Arab community in Canada. The idea struck a chord with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which made him the youngest commissioned director in its history. After three years of production, “Being Osama” became the quintessential film about the Arab Diaspora. It received four international awards to date, a special screening at the Harvard Film Archive, and a nomination for the Best Practice in fighting racism in Canada for 2004. The film was lately aired on Al Arabiyya and all the Al Jazeera channels, in addition to 12 other international channels. Mahmoud has been profiled in Al Hayat, Digital Studio, Qantara, The Globe and Mail, The Independent, and Forbes Arabia. He was also featured on MBC’s The Investor, and was the center of a 2-hr special on Zaven’s Seereh Winfatahet- which also featured an audience of 60 men named ‘Osama’.

Since moving to Dubai in 2005, Mahmoud has been directing and executive producing high-end corporate films for major GCC clients, including Dubai Holding and Dubai Investments. He has also been pre-producing his upcoming documentary “MetroSufi”, about the profound implications of Sufism in urban Europe.
