Lost Boss Explains Last Night's Double Demise

SPOILER ALERT for those who DVR/"videotape" Lost for later playback.... That the producers decided to kill off much-maligned castaways Nikki and Paulo on this week's episode may not have been a shock to fans. But how the greedy, murderous pair died provided one of the biggest twists — and thrills — of the season. (After being paralyzed by spider bites, the not-so-dynamic duo were buried alive — albeit unwittingly — by Sawyer and Hurley.) "People hated them before they even opened their mouths to say anything significant because it felt like they were crashing the party," exec producer Damon Lindelof acknowledges of the characters who were abruptly introduced last fall. "The easiest thing would have been to just write them out and forget they ever happened, like the cougar on [Season 2] of 24. But that's not Lost. We should at least own up to it."

Kiele Sanchez wasn't bothered by the criticism directed at Nikki and reveled in going out with a bang, yet wasn't too crazy about filming the burial scene: "I am horribly claustrophobic — I can't even have a blanket over my face — so I didn't have to do a lot of acting. I was genuinely terrified." — Reporting by Shawna Malcom

I can't even write what I said during that seen last night. :O I have read some critisism of the episode but I found it facinating. Wow!

Do you think they killed them off because fans didn't like them, or do you think that was in the plan?

I absolutely loved seeing all that stuff from a different viewpoint. And Shannon and Boone. I was so excited to see them again. And Artz with all his little creatures. Where did he get all the jars?

I am glad they are gone, because they were a little distracting/annoying/unnecessary, but wow! what a way to go!

I loved the Episode but HATE that they were written off. I will never, ever understand why people took so poorly to the characters. They didn't even have a chance; what a ridiculous response by the so-called fan base. Nikki and Paolo were introduced slowly, emerged from the background without fanfare, and could have been up to ANYTHING for the first 80-some days on the island - a fact that could have been used to great effect in the season finale, or Season 4, or any point down the road after we grew more comfortable with them. I'm very disappointed that fans are trying to dictate the story, and wish that we could have some long-term character mysteries instead of the instant gratification that people have been demanding (and unfortunately receiving) recently.

I was shocked by their deaths too. Don't the producers understand that the reason fans don't like them is because they were never properly introduced? What the fans wanted was a decent backstory like last night. They should have kept them alive at the end. I thought killing them was a big mistake.

I can only say that this is the best episode of the season, extremely well written, well acted, full of surprises. The ending left me on shock, as I watched the episode on abc.com I didn't got previews from next episode so I have to wait and see if they get out. THIS IS THE EPISODE THEY SHOULD SEND FOR EMMY CONSIDERATION.
One more thing, How did they do it, going back in time and make this people fit on scenes we have already watched?

Lost is becoming way too predictable. If they announce that someone will die it is always the character in the flashback that week. Whatever is mentioned at the beginning always plays a part in the end of each episode; i.e. the spider. We knew Locke was going to become paralyzed and there were several clues pointing to his dad as the culprit. And when John was between his dad and the window it became obvious how it was going to happen. It didn't even surprise me when John's dad was on the island. Jack's dad will come back too. Maybe the island will give him life again or else he will be some kind of spirit - but he is coming back. A few more episodes and I will be finished with this show.

I didn't care about them one way or the other because of the way they were introduced - or I should say the way they WEREN'T introduced. All of a sudden they were there - like who are you? (Sawyer's comment was everyone else's I bet). There are so many people we've drawn close to since the show started and there are some we don't even get to see anymore so the fact a new pair showed up with no fanfare and were just there occasionally got to be nonsense and annoying. I liked the backstory last night - they're a rather conniving nasty pair we'd probably be better without (I mean maybe they'd try to kill someone on the island but for what gain?) - but the WAY it happened - knowing they were being buried alive - and tell me - am I wrong or did she suddenly open her eyes at the last minute? Can't even remember her name, so they WON'T be missed!! So much more to see and learn about without people just thrown in for no good reason.

I was under the impression that the writers of the show really wanted us to embrace Nikki and Paolo and therefore wrote a story for these characters that is supposed to make us like them-a complete characted makeover. There was nothing in this story to make us like them.
do you think the writers changed their mind and altered the story at the last second.

Did anyone realize that Paolo is the same actor who played "Xerxes" in the movie 300 ?

Well I guess this means they really are dead then? Fine with me.

I also wondered about the jars.

And like Kiele, I too cannot stand to have anything over my face. Being buried alive is probably my worst fear.

Any one catch that last week Locke was watching Expose ?? You heard on the tv they were talking about 'Cobra' when the boy showed up at his door.

I didn't think the episode was predictable at all. I was surprised they would plan such a gruesome death for folk we hardly even know.

I don't think we ever got to know them because the writers decided to change whatever story line they intended for them. With the Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Others story line it derailed all of the other intentions. So they ended up with two characters who were unpopular and they decided to get rid of them. I really don't think they have thought this through. They have an explanation for the island, monster, others, etc... but don't know what to do with the week to week stories or the less major characters. It is a serious flaw because viewers are tuning out.
