Publisher's description of iTunes

From Apple:

iTunes, the award-winning digital-jukebox software, is now available for Mac and Windows. The iTunes Music Store offers Windows users the same online music store as Mac users, with the same music catalog, the same personal-use rights, and the same 99-cents-per-song pricing. With music from all five major music companies and more than 600 independent labels, the iTunes Music Store catalog now offers more than 1,000,000 songs. Features include a free download with no hidden charges for extra features, MP3 and pristine-quality AAC-encoding from audio CDs, smart playlists, more than 250 free Internet radio stations, and the ability to burn custom playlists to CDs and MP3 CDs, to burn content to DVDs to back up an entire music collection, and to share music via Rendezvous over any network, cross-platform.

Version 7.4.3.1 is a maintenance release.

Editor's review of iTunes

Audio? Video? iTunes can do it

Although iTunes has always been one of the best pieces of jukebox software available, the company improved upon a great thing with version 7, which has added enhanced video capabilities, ringtone editing for the iPhone and new ways to view your music library.

A cleaned-up left sidebar makes finding your music and videos a snap and the new Album and Cover-Flow view options let you flip through CDs in style. The built-in video player accommodates both your own files and ones bought at the iTunes Store. Right-clicking a clip lets you render it iPod-compatible. With the addition of full-length movies at the iTunes Store, you can now view near-DVD quality movies at a resolution of 640x480.

The experience of both purchasing and playing movies and videos is almost identical to performing the same actions with music, so seasoned users will have no trouble. Old popular features remain intact including seamless iPod integration, smart playlists, CD burning, label printing, the ability to rip files in multiple formats (except WMA), network sharing, and, of course, the enormously successful iTunes Store.

The iTunes Store also offers DRM-free, higher sound quality songs, but they're more expensive than the standard $0.99. The aforementioned ringtone editor, set to go live the second or third week in September 2007, will also cost extra.

Rounding out the feature set are parental controls, integrated podcasts, and a smart-shuffle option. iTunes is sometimes clunky on Windows, and can cause significant processor slowdowns. Still, it remains a top-notch player and iTunes 7 should find a home on any media junkie's computer.

Still a bloated piece of garbage for most users.

by: SceptreX on 03-Oct-2007 07:26:04 AM

Pros: iPod integration is excellent, and the iTunes store is still a stunning piece of work. They layout is nice and the features are full.

Cons: If you're running Windows, and don't have an iPod, don't even bother. iTunes is just another example of how poor Apple is at making programs (or how quick they are at making them junk so that other OS' get the short stick). The thing takes up way too much processor speed to be healthy, so forget multitasking.

Download MediaMonkey or Musikcube instead.

Where Does Apple Get Off?

Where Does Apple Get Off?

Pros: Nothing -- see below...

Cons: It seems that every time I open iTunes, it wants me to install the latest update. With each update, it packages all kinds of stuff I don't need or want, like iTunes helper, iPod Helper, QuickTime, and Apple Software Update. Moreover, they are all set to start up with my computer and run all the time, forcing me to manually disable each and every one these items using msconfig or some other utility.

However, the last straw came yesterday, when for some reason, I was unable to send out any e-mails through Outlook. After looking at account settings, firewall provisions, connections, etc., I decided to reboot the system and restart Outlook to see if that might help.

When Outlook started, it provided a helpful message stating that it had not been able to work properly due to the presence of the ITUNES SYNC ADDIN and would I like it disabled. I responded yes, and suddenly, my backlog of unsent e-mails all were able to go out.

My question is, WHERE DOES APPLE GET OFF INSTALLING AN ADDIN TO OUTLOOK WITHOUT NOTIFICATION OR PERMISSION? By installing this addin that breaks Outlook, Apple shows the same regard for its customers as Sony did with its rootkit installation.

Please do yourself a favor -- buy your music from Amazon. It works with the iPod, doesn't require invasive bloatware, and is DRM-free.

For the Apple products and newer computers it's not a bad program.

by: qazwsx34651 on 07-Oct-2007 10:20:37 AM

Pros: Playlists are easy to create. Good sync-age to iPod. Simple design and good media library design. Burning/ripping is easy. iTunes store built in. Internet Radio plug-in is nice.

Cons: Still very slow when it comes to computer resources. Uses around 50MB of memory in use without even playing anything. Not too much for how much I have on my computer (1 GB) but a pain for older computers. With the visualizer and cover flow it explodes my processor and memory, as high as 300MB RAM is used. (seriously)

I prefer the older version...with less extra baggage...

by: porsche911girl on 18-Oct-2007 09:13:32 PM

Pros: The new user interface is nice. That, and its ability to recognise and import SACD cds is nice. The rest I could do without.

Cons: Seeing as I don't have (or want) an iphone, nor do I watch DVDs or TV shows, or purchase anything from the itunes store, I have no need for half the stuff that's in this latest version. I also detest the fact that you *have* to download quicktime with it. They should make a 'lite' version of itunes for those of us who just want a basic itunes to listen to music and podcasts with.

The "We Own the System" War Continues...

by: windvane on 10-Oct-2007 02:41:51 AM

Pros: iTunes is loaded with impressive and flashy capabilities, especially for those willing to wade through a giant set of sub-applications in order to do simple things (like play a song). Features will keep coming, and if you are an iPod user it's looking to please you in particular.

Cons: iTunes is to music management and playing as today's cellphone is to calling someone. That is, if you need a camera and an mp3 player and internet access and an IM device and a GPS tracker and... and... etc. to make a call and talk with your Aunt Matilda, well OK for you. Get it? All the extraneous stuff gets in the way and provides an enhanced source for dependencies and frustration. (Of course it is kinda' pretty.)
