This butterfly is done with two colors of thread, it's not a very good photo, but it is done with burgundy and black. (When I first made this I was not sure if there was a name for the overlapping picots at top of the wings. I have since found out it is a form of Pearl Tatting.) Click here for Pearl Tatting How To To do this, thread your needle with one of the colors working off the ball. Pull out about a yard of thread. (I used the black for the needle thread.) Where you are about to make your first double stitch, place your next color, leaving a 2" tail. And start by making your first double stitch.
R=Ring Ch=Chian P=Picot Cl=Close RW=Reverse Work LJ=Lock Join(pull needle thread through picot and put needle through the loop and lock it down on the picot)
Starting with the left wing (your left) working off the ball:

Ch 3ds p 3ds p 3ds Cl RW
R 4ds + ( attach to last picot of first ring) 4ds p 4ds p 4ds CL RW
Ch 3ds p 3ds p 3ds p 3ds p 3ds CL RW
R 3ds + (attach to center picot of prev ring) 3ds p 3ds p 3ds Cl RW
Ch 3ds p 3ds Cl RW
R 3ds + (attach to last picot of prev ring) 3ds p 3ds p 3ds Cl do not turn.
Working back up with outside chains
Ch 3ds p 3ds p 3ds LJ into next picot of last ch made.
Ch 3ds p 3ds LJ, use next picot do not skip.
Ch 3ds p 3ds p 3ds LJ- skip next picot
Ch Top of wing: Make a ds with both colors first, take first color and make 2ds - Take next color make a picot about 3/4" long and do 3ds - Take first color make 3/4" picot - continue with the two colors back and forth for 8 LP on the 9th just make 1ds and pick up both colors to make your next 2ds. Continue using the two colors for another 12ds, LJ in next picot.

Last Ch bottom of wing - 3ds p 3ds p 3ds p 3ds p 3ds skip picot and tie and cut next to first ch made.
For the other half, so both sides are good side, work up from bottom of pattern to top large Ring. Cut and tie and then start your outside border.
The Body, working with thread and needle about 2 ft. Place your needle in the picot top , center of butterfly. (I just used one color on the body, you can make it with both colors if desired)
R 8ds pull thread up in next picot and 8ds LP (for tail) 8ds pull thread in next picot of other wing and 8ds pull thread in last picot and close ring, leaving the ends for antennas.
