|Race, Immigration and American Destiny |

As news broke about the immigration amnesty bill that Washington leaders are seeking to impose on an unwilling American majority, a related story about how America itself was changing was also thrust into the debate. Reported the New York Times on May 17 "The Census Bureau estimated yesterday that from July 1, 2005 to July 1, 2006, the nation's minority population grew to 100.7 million from 98.3 million... With the number of nonwhite Americans above 100 million for the first time, demographers are identifying an emerging racial generation gap." These statistics reflect what even casual observers must have long realized - that due in part to declining birthrates, but primarily immigration, America is becoming less white. But what does this mean?
Before his death in 1995, one of the last wishes of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was that his country remain at least 80% Jewish, believing that how Jewish his country remained was integral to its character. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin expressed the desire for his city to remain a "chocolate city," he was only stating the obvious. Or as Nagin put it "this city will be a majority African-American city… You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans."
And both Rabin and Nagin were correct. Demography is indeed destiny and just like the type of crowd in a bar or restaurant defines those establishments, the character of a city, state or nation is defined by its people. If the entire country of China began reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and celebrating the 4th of July, this would make them no more American than screwing up our calendar would make us Chinese. And an America in which whites were a minority would be a drastic departure from the America we know and love today.
That merely pointing out this fact is scandalous is telling. While Mexicans would balk at the idea of a majority "gringo" Mexico, or the Japanese at the notion of a non-Asian Japan, white folks suffer from a pathology exclusive to them alone, or as National Review's John Derbyshire explained in a recent column "The common understanding at present is that open expressions of race consciousness are taboo for white-Anglo Americans, but just fine for everyone else. A leading black presidential candidate subtitles his best-selling biography 'A Story of Race and Inheritance'; the main lobbying organization for Hispanics carries the proud title 'National Council of the Race'; and so on. This word is, however, not available to white-Anglo Americans in reference to themselves, and white-Anglo Americans are indoctrinated from childhood to believe, or to pretend to believe, that race is an empty category."
And Derbyshire is correct. The problem when discussing race period, is that those who insist that race means nothing are as stubborn and as extreme as those who insist that race means everything. Of course race matters, and being black, Hispanic, Asian or white is as integral to one's identity as being a man or a woman, gay or straight, Christian or not. Only a child or a Washington senator could ignore this reality, as million dollar industries have risen to cater exclusively to particular racial groups within the US. Money does indeed talk and BS walks, just ask Italian-American Jerrold Perenchio, whose Hispanic television channel Univision has made him a billionaire.
That Americans, white or otherwise, don't want Spanish-speaking people dominating their airwaves, neighborhoods or country is no more racist than Mexico's lack of interest in Seinfeld. Native Americans had no illusions about how their land would change as boatloads of white men landed on their shores and modern Americans aren't wrong to deplore the millions of Mexicans coming here now. A non-white majority America would simply cease to be America for reasons that are as numerous as they are obvious – whether we are supposed to mention them or not.
