Love Will Tear Us Apart

This post is almost cliche, I know that. I'm ok with that. This is seemingly the most widely covered song in the mp3 blog universe and thus the indie rock world. This list might be the most comprehensive list of those covers, I don't know, but it's at least impressively close.

Joy Division

I mean, I guess I need to go back to Rules of Indie Rock Success to really explain this one.

Rule #1: Put a hot girl on keyboard or bass.
Rule #2: Cover Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart

Are you listening bands?! This is it right here! The formula's simplicity is what makes it beautiful. I know, I know. You've been struggling, you're working so hard looking for that one break. Your music is better than all of the shite they are playing on MTV. Ask yourself these two things: Have I covered Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart? Do we have a hot girl somewhere in the band? If you answered "no" to either or both of those questions then send a self-addressed stamped envelope to the address on the side of the blog for my FREE tapes on indie rock success. Please include $49.95 for shipping and handling.

Kidding, kidding. Do not send me any money, there are no tapes. I have given you the two rules, it's just that simple. Anyway, here it is, the second key to indie rock success:

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Peel Session)

The Frames - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Jose Gonzalez - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Calexico - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Moonspell - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Shanes - Love Will Tear Us Apart
The String Quartet Tribute - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Nouvelle Vague - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Bis - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Swans - Love Will Tear Us Apart (different than version below)
New Order - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Live at Tower Ballroom in Birmingham, May 9th, 1983)
U2 & The Arcade Fire - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Live)
The Cure - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Hawksley Workman - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Paul Young - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Prozak For Lovers - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Albert Kuvezin & Yat-Kha - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Brothers Past - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Boy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Kaycee - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Märtini Bros. Mix)
Squarepusher - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Stanton-Miranda - Love Will Tear Us Apart
The Tea Party - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Live)
10,000 Maniacs - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Live)

If you have another version, please send it to me or point me to it.

Furthermore: If you have a loved song that is widely covered and you'd like to see them all assembled in one place, send them to me and I will consider it/put something together on MOKB. Thanks!

"a day in the life" is well covered...obviously beatles original is best but phish and sting have decent covers and jeff beck has good instrumental.

same goes for across the universe. rufus wainwright, fiona, bowie, tori amos...apparently roger waters also did a cover.

great post btw.

At 6:12 AM, Franswa spat...

Awesome post !! It's a real pleasure to listen to all those differents versions ! Thank you very much !

"Somewhere over the rainbow" was recently covered a lot too (Flaming Lips...) :)

At 6:18 AM, absonderpop spat...

Wow, that was quick ;-)

If those of you interested head over to my (German language) blog at you'll find a posting with 10 versions of "At the Dark End of the Street".

Cheers, Netzhaut

At 6:22 AM, Dodge spat...

Yeah! Thanks for the three new covers of "LWTUA" Netzhaut! I'll check your post! Thanks again!

At 6:44 AM, scooter spat...

The band Brothers Past, out of Philadelphia, PA, plays a pretty sweet version of the song, though they have not recorded it in the studio. A pretty good live version can be found here.

At 7:18 AM, Anonymous spat...

Love Will Tear Us Apart may be the best pop song ever written. That said, I can't imagine covering that song and not feeling silly.

Also, can the New Order version really be considered a "cover?"

At 7:29 AM, absonderpop spat...

Your welcome!

BTW, I'm just putting up a short posting on "Solitary Man" at

Cheers, Netzhaut

At 7:38 AM, panaphonic spat...

Paul Young's version is fascinating in its crapitude.

Squarepusher did a pretty good version. Beats me where you could find it though.

At 7:43 AM, K. spat...

Jah Division has a track called Dub will Tear us Apart its great. Ill try and find it and send it your way.

At 8:19 AM, Anonymous spat...

the smiths' "there is a light that never goes out" is also a widely covered song. i've heard more than 10 covers of that song.
could you post it too?

At 8:24 AM, Dodge spat...

wait and see! ;)

At 8:40 AM, wendy spat...

hilarious and astute post Dodge (as usual ;-)

At 8:47 AM, Matthew spat...

Iggy and the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is covered by many, in and out of English

At 9:03 AM, The MZA spat...

Awesome list - really enjoyed listening.

You can find the Jah Division recording of "Dub Will Tear Us Apart", mentioned by k above, on their MySpace page:

At 9:12 AM, Anonymous spat...

these are the artists who covered the smiths' "there is a light..."

1. The Lucksmiths
2. Divine Comedy
3. Nada Surf
4. Joseph Arthur
5. Loquat (my favorite version)
6. Magic Numbers
7. Neurotic Fish
8. Erlende Oye
9. Death Cab For Cutie

i forgot the others...
here are some links, you can find some of them. >>>LOTS OF SMITHS COVERS!!!

At 9:28 AM, Phil spat...

Also covering "There Is A Light"... Neil Finn and Paul Kelly. Both versions live. If you need copies of them, let me know.

At 9:41 AM, sfenn spat...

Pete Doherty stumbles through part of 'There is a light...' on his 'Shaking and Withdrawn' 'album.' There's also And Scarlet Leonine and Schneider TM, who probably does the best version ('The Light 3000').

Radiohead's 'Creep' is well covered too. Pretenders, Tears For Fears, Moby, Richard Cheese, Damien Rice, Jon Brion, etc.

At 10:48 AM, Anonymous spat...

Hahaha, nice.

At 11:27 AM, RJ spat...

I may have some not on your list but will have to check when I get home.

There is a artist list of LWTUA covers on this page:

I also collect WILD HORSES covers, RING OF FIRE covers, HALLELUJAH covers and a few more.

At 11:31 AM, Gilberto spat...

Nada Surf. They do this game live, where they replace "love" with "lunch" in song titles (can't buy me lunch, lunch lunch me do, can't hurry lunch, i wanna know what lunch is, etc). Sometimes at the end of their gigs, the song tehy are playing as a closer morphs into "Lunch will tear us apart".

Oh and last time i saw them live in Toronto, they also did "There is a light that never goes out", lovely accounstic version.

At 12:19 PM, Richard spat...

The lead vocalist, Claude S, from the synthpop band Anything Box did cover 'Love will tear us apart' in a solo effort in 1995. His solo band was named 'The Diary' and the album titled 'Page One'.

My opinion of the cover? It's dull It's self-indulgent.

At 9:04 PM, ant spat...

I really really thought that Magnetic Fields had covered 'Love Will Tear Us Apart,' but I can't find it ANYWHERE. Anyone know anything about it? I feel like I'm going nuts.

At 9:21 PM, Anonymous spat...

fantastic collection. rock rock rock.

At 9:41 PM, Eric spat...

You have outdone yourself. This is fantastic. Don't forget Jah Division's "Dub Will Tear Us Apart"

At 11:16 PM, Anonymous spat...

I'd LOVE to see a MOKB post with all the copies of "There is a light", there have been some stellar covers of that song. Another classic for covering is "Wild Horses" by pretty much everybody.

At 11:47 PM, typenerd spat...

Simple Minds (a band I mostly admire) did an absolutely horrid cover in which they made it into an upbeat dance number. I shit you not.

These aren't from particularly famous bands, but there's a jazzy bossa version here and a campy lounge version here.

At 11:57 PM, Rich spat...

You missed the Stanton-Miranda version on "A Means to an End: The Music of Joy Division" I have the CD somewhere...

At 1:42 AM, elia spat...

Thanks for The Swans version there. Been looking for that gem for years.

i know nada surf has been mentioned a few times, just wanted to add that they only splice a chunk of the song into their own "stalemate" from the high/low album.

At 6:49 AM, Anonymous spat...

Sorry, but my favorite song with tons of covers is "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha - my favorites are Elvis' version... and Ethel Merman's. I'd love to find more!

At 7:34 AM, Anonymous spat...

Acutally the Jah Division song is called "DUB WILL TEAR US APART"

At 8:23 AM, Anonymous spat...

Excellent list!

On my iPod I've got six covers of Gin & Juice by Snoop Dogg. I believe that sone will eventually surpass LWTUA as the most covered song.

At 8:37 AM, Anonymous spat...

The Boston band The Swinging Erudites did a parody of this song on their album Pretentious Crapola, that was titled "The Captain & Tenille Meet Joy Division." The lyrics, sung to the Joy Division tune, are: "Love, love will keep us together-er...", then a repeat of "I will, I will, I will, I will, etc." (thanks, Margaret - Buellton, CA)

I'd love to find an MP3 of that version.

At 9:29 AM, j. edward keyes spat...

actually, there's a mix that Malcoolm McLaren made that combines "Love Will Tear Us Apart" w. "Love Will Keep Us Together." It's kind of amazing. I've been looking for it, unsuccessfully, for over a year. Can anyone help?

A throat singing cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Albert Kuvezin and Yat-Kha

The second Swans cover posted here has a glitch in it - does anyone have it without the record skipping?

At 11:58 AM, Ruby Khan spat...

Fun post, thanks. And thanks for the link to the throat singing version, whoever you are.

FYI, "There is a Light" was also covered by Braid--it's fist-in-the-air emo at its best. Worst. Best. Whichever.
