The Two Tunnels Shared Use Path

The Two Tunnels Path seeks to link the Bath to Bristol cycleway to the Colliers Way. The route follows the former Somerset and Dorset Railway through Linear Park, the Devonshire Tunnel, Lyncombe Vale, the Combe Down tunnel, Tucking Mill viaduct, and then along the current footpath to Midford. A Working Group has been formed consisting of representatives from the Council, Sustrans and the Two Tunnels Group.

A Feasibility Study has been commenced by Sustrans. It will include designs sufficient to establish realistic cost estimates. Sustrans have contacted the different landowners along the route and begun negotiations to assemble all the components.  Rare bats have been found in parts of the tunnels, and research is going on into possible mitigation measures to protect them.

Sustrans has put forward a national “connecting communities” project bid under the National Lottery’s Living Landmarks Scheme of which the Two Tunnels project will be a part.  It has made a shortlist of six such projects which will receive £0.5m to work up in greater detail.  A shorter shortlist of projects will be presented in a television program next year, giving the public a chance to vote. This will only provide part of the funding, and further funding will be required.   For further information visit www.twotunnels.org.uk
