About CEPF

The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) is a global program that provides grants to nongovernmental organizations and other private sector partners to protect critical ecosystems.

We focus on biodiversity hotspots, the Earth's biologically richest yet most endangered areas.

Together, the hotspots harbor half the diversity of life yet they have already lost 86 percent of their original habitat.

The convergence of critical areas for conservation with millions of people who are impoverished and highly dependent on healthy ecosystems for their survival is also more evident in the hotspots than anywhere else.

Our support equips nongovernmental groups and other sectors of civil society to conserve their environment and influence decisions that affect lives, livelihoods, and, ultimately, the global environment.

As of July 2007, CEPF has supported more than 1,200 civil society groups in conserving hotspots in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Our grants:
  • Target hotspots in developing and transitional countries.
  • Are guided by region-specific investment strategies developed with diverse stakeholders.
  • Go directly to civil society groups to build this vital constituency for conservation alongside governmental partners.
  • Create strategic working alliances among diverse groups, combining unique capacities and eliminating duplication of efforts.
  • Achieve tangible results through an ever-expanding network of conservation stewards.
