Those little construction signs all over the place are irritating, you say? Please bear with us. They serve an important function both for the reader and for site development. This site is continuously under construction. There are well over 3000 pages (which, if printed on paper, would amount to over tenfold that number, so don't try it!). New material and new pages are being added almost daily.

In the beginning we did not publish a regiment or war page until it had fairly complete content. But in late 2000, we decided to release skeletal or template pages in order to facilitate site development since we make very high use of internal linking for ease of navigation. This is important for several reasons, including maintaining symetry and parallelism of related pages, having a place to record new information as it becomes available, and alerting readers to what they can eventually expect to see. (See also Scope of this Site.)

We recognise that some aspects of this style of development may be frustrating to the user when nothing seems to be happening to a page for several months in succession, but these compromises are deliberate in order to expedite publication of material. For example, a war page may not yet contain any narrative, but it is a place holder for scores or hundreds of regimental pages linking to it, and, at the very least, it will contain a list of battles and dates. Likewise a regiment page may remain "bare" for quite some time, but, at the very least, it will contain lineage information linked to appropriate lists, indexes, and other regimental pages. In short, there is often more than readily meets the eye, and the utility of the site would be crippled without all these pages in various stages of development. If you are looking for "complete" information on any particular regiment or war, you might be disappointed, but if you view the site as an encyclopaedia of regiments and wars, you will find many aspects already well developed.

Development of this site tends to advance topically across a wide spectrum. That is to say, for example, lists of colonels for all regiments of one nation are added rather than fully developing all aspects of one regimental page. There is no fixed schedule for the development of any page or the site in general, but we are driven by popular demand, so your requests for information will be taken into account (even if we do not have time to respond directly).  We are also driven by the availability of external sites which need to be linked to this site. This reflects world wide web growth around the world, and therefore the United Kingdom and Canada pages tend to be the most extensively developed.
