Yediyurappa bereaved

SHIMOGA, OCT. 16. Maitradevi Yediyurappa, wife of B.S. Yediyurappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, died today under tragic circumstances.

She was 55, and is survived by her husband, two sons and three daughters.

She was reported to have slipped and fallen into the sump in their house at Vinobanagar here while drawing water from it in a bucket around 7.30 a.m. She was alone at home at the time.

The maidservant, who arrived a little later, was surprised when she did not find Ms. Yediyurappa in the house. She first searched the house and then came outside to see if Ms. Yediyurappa was watering the plants in the compound. She found the body in the sump.

Mr. Yediyurappa, who had returned to his native town of Shikaripur early this morning after a tour, rushed here on hearing about the incident.

The body was taken to Shikaripur for the funeral, which was held in the evening after the post-mortem was conducted at the McGann Hospital here.

A large number of visitors, including the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy; the Shimoga MLA, K.S. Eshwarappa; the Deputy Commissioner, Tushar Girinath; the Additional Superintendent of Police, D.C. Rajappa; councillors and BJP workers visited Mr. Yediyurappa's house to offer their condolences.

The State BJP in-charge, Vedprakash Goyal; the State BJP president, H.N. Ananth Kumar; the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, B. Janardhana Poojary; the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh; the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah; the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Krishna; the former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily; the former Minister R.V. Deshpande; and the BJP State general secretary, Arvind Limbavalli, have mourned the untimely death of Ms. Yediyurappa.
