FAQs

What is Podcasting? Where should I submit? How to I get people to listen? These are just some of the most frequently asked questions I get about podcasting.

So, I put together a list of resources to help you get started.

What is podcasting?
Take a look at Scott Bourne’s Podcasting 101 page. He provides an excellent overview.

Where do I submit so people can find my podcast?
Check out Podcasting News list of podcast directories.

What can I use to edit and record my audio?
Audacity is a free software you can use.

What do you use, Leesa, to record your podcasts over the phone?
I use Skype to connect to my guest, Pamela to record the interview and a Plantronics headset plugged into my computer so my voice is captured. After I’m finished with my interview, Pamela saves the recording as an MP3 file on my computer. This entire setup cost me $100.

I’ve heard of people using their telephone to record interviews. Is that true? If so, what service should I use?
There are 2 services I recommend:

  • Live Office offers a free 10-digit phone number that you can use to host conference calls. After you sign up, you will get information on how to record calls.
  • Audio Acrobat is a monthly paid service. You get a 10-digit number and you can use it to not only record conference calls, but also set up a variety of numbers to capture audio testimonials. They also offer buttons so you can post your audio file right away, as well as an RSS feed if you want to podcast your audio or video file.

And what about mobile interviews?

I started off using an Olympus recorder, which cost me around $130 CDN about 2-years ago. I’ve since upgraded to an Edirol R-09, around $400 USD.

I’m a do-it-yourselfer. How can I get a tutorial for free from beginning to end?
Check out Jason Van Orden’s How To Podcast tutorial. Or check out Robert Walch’s free tutorial on how to get started podcasting.

Okay, the technical details are great, but I need help with the strategy, especially making money with a podcast and growing my audience. What do you offer, Leesa?
