Exclusive: Lost Resurrects Libby!

OK, so technically, the ABC hit isn't bringing Cynthia Watros' short-lived character back from the dead. But Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse confirms to me exclusively that the actress will be playing Hurley's dearly departed sweetheart again this season for multiple episodes, presumably in more flashbacks.

"She'll be in enough of the show for us to fill in the missing pieces of her story," says Cuse. "We could not be more pleased. Cynthia is a smart and engaging actor, and [executive producer] Damon [Lindelof] and I have some very cool parts of her story left to tell."

It's by pure chance that Emmy winner Watros was even available for the return engagement: Her fall pilot, The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud, wasn't picked up, which left a spot open on her dance card.

That's all I've got, folks — your turn. Are you as giddy about Watros' return as I am? And do you think her comeback proves this theory true? Sound off below! (And yes, this is the big casting news on an USWL that I alluded to in this week's Ask Ausiello.)

To Ackermaniv: Come to think of it, that comment kinda annoys me too. Saying she'll presumably appear in Desmond's flashbacks was pretty short-sighted of me. In my defense, I'm still heavily jet-lagged.

What about Charlie? I just hope they show him at least in the season preem.

I love Libby too so I'm happy about this news! I didn't watch Lost from its inception but I thankfully saw the light early this year and watched all the episodes in one fun-filled and exciting month, and I absolutely remember Libby. :)

I still remember her face when she was shot by Michael - oh, so heartbreaking. I hope they get Ana Lucia back too, even just for flashback or two.

I still remember her face when she was shot by Michael - oh, so heartbreaking.

This is what made Libby's death so shocking, that and the fact that her romance w/Hurley was just budding, so it was extra sad to see her go.

But I'm w/the other posters who wrote that they thought this was about SWC on Prison Break--I'm STILL SO UPSET that she's not coming back!!! Isn't there anything TPTB over at PB can do to convince her??? Look at the fan following Michael & Sara have!!!

But anyway, back to the real reason for this blog--I cannot WAIT for the Season 3 DVD to drop. We'll have almost two months to watch it, before S4 premieres. How soon into S4 will there be a Demond-centric episode, and will CW be appearing right away? Will there be any sort of connection between Libby and Penny?!? Enquiring minds want to know!!!

I'm very happy for this news. Yes I remember her very well.

First of all, Hurley is one of my favorites, witty, smart and insightful. I was happy when they introduced her character and really disappointed when they killed her before closing the ends properly.

Also, what was going on in the hospital? She kinda looked invisible like she was severely depressed and maybe a little resentful towards Hurley or the more joyful group he was with.

Am I the only one that saw something weird at the hospital or was that a hallucination?

Whoa! Hey Michael, while I was reading this Ausiello Report, you appeared on my screen! It was your cameo on Scrubs, which aired on Comedy Central tonight. You need to stop following me around, Michael. People are starting to talk!

This is really good news. I love her and the character. Anything to make my favorite show of all time better is great news in my book.

YES! I have been waiting to see her story for soooo long. The very ending of 'Dave' from season 2 where you see LIbby was in the mental hospital made me and my sister literally scream and cling to one another. FREAKY!

When I read the AA report about someone returning, my initial thought was "It's either Tony on 24, or Libby on Lost." I really should have posted that in the AA thread, just to have it on the record, since less than 48 hours later both of my guesses are proved right.

Personally, I am excited. This is one of the plotlines that I am really anxious to see resolved, and see how easily they can provide her backstory. I mean, obviously they are going to have to use flashbacks, but they're obviously limited since unless they use her in flashbacks for the new characters, she doesn't seem to have had enough contact with anyone to really remember her.

I remember when the season 2 finale aired, and in a post-episode blog Michael Ausiello made a comment along the lines of how Libby's husband was called David, and Hurley's imaginary friend was Dave, and that this was consistent with what he had heard about Libby's backstory. Something like that.

Oh Em Gee this is defo dead good.

I LOVED Libby and felt her death was a mistake. She had tons of story left to tell and I'm glad Damon & Carlton think so too. Soooooo happy. Thanks for making my day Michael. To think I thought the hint was about Walt. Ha.

Awesome poopage.

While this is fantastic OFFICIAL news, it's not news news. Darlton have been saying for ever (and as recently as Comic-Con) that they wanted to tell Libby's backstory and would try to get to it as soon as Ms. Watros' schedule permitted. So, bravo to all who made this happen.

Now, if only Ellen Wheeler could pull "a One Life to Live-style Nathan Fillion" and get Ms. Watros to however brielfly reprise her role as the deliciously evil Annie Dutton on Guiding Light, the world would be a better and happier place. LOL

Cynthia's and Michelle's dui arrests the same hour (December 2005) drew lots of negative publicity in Hawaii. Despite all the official denials, I really wondered if Libby took that bullet for it.

I can't say I'm at all surprised by this. It was always clear there was a lot more to Libby's story and who she really was than was shown. I've remained curious about the character and will be happy to see it developed.

While I don't consider Cynthia Watros' talent to be at the same level of many of the other actors on Lost, she is credible enough as an actress to make me eager to see this story.
