Kitchen Princess v4
Reviewed by Dan Polley

Najika finally learns the identity of her Flan Prince. And that’s not all the action that takes place in the fourth volume of Kitchen Princess by Natsumi Ando and Miyuki Kobayashi. Romance also starts to stir up the plot in a few different ways.

Having returned to Seika Academy, Najika finds a bit a turmoil in her relationship with Daichi Kitazawa. Of course, all this hassle is over just a watch — right? It is until someone can admit true feelings.

In the meantime, Najika finally is able to have a heart-to-heart conversation with her Flan Prince. And in the end, it’s someone who’s always been looking out for her.

Also, Sora Kitazawa comes back with excellent news from his piano contest and decides he’ll help Najika enter a contest of her own. But to do so, Najika must find that right recipe, one that could be made for that special friend.

In the process of trying to discover her recipe for the contest, Najika finds that she has more friends than she thought and that maybe she’s not as alone at the Seika Academy as she might have thought.

And when Najika gets some good news, she finds that there’s different ways that her friends would like to congratulate her.

The beginnings of romantic relationships begin to develop the plot a bit more than just a Najika-versus-the-world dynamic. And the way in which those relationships develop leads extra drama into the kitchen.

The sequence near the end of the volume really puts some much-needed romantic tension into the series and helps to propel the fifth volume into can’t-wait status.

Najika continues to be a wonderful character and lead for Kitchen Princess. But it’s the supporting cast and the relationships they all have with Najika that really lends this volume extra flair.
