Whitnall confirms his retirement

SACKED Carlton captain Lance Whitnall has retired from AFL football because of his debilitating knee injury.

Whitnall was shown the door by the Blues last month because of concerns over his knee problems, and had been considering nominating for the NAB AFL pre-season draft in order to continue his career.

But the 28-year-old said two medical opinions that his future prospects would be limited by a degenerative knee joint had forced him into retirement.

"Whilst I am extremely disappointed after receiving the second opinion, I am already looking forward to the future," Whitnall said in a statement.

"I thoroughly enjoyed playing AFL and thank the Carlton fans for all their support over the years."

Whitnall played 216 AFL matches in his 11-year career with the Blues.
