2K8 sneak peek.2

Preliminary character designs of April and Casey for the 2K8 season. "A bit more movie," eh?

4Kids' in-house design group for the '08 season:

Roy Burdine (art director), Adrian Barrios (character design), Keith Conroy (layout supervisor), Edwin Nebres (props/storyboards), Andrew Bradshaw (prop design).

These look great. I can rest easy now. Looks like a great season to come.

When will the first episode air? 08/08 ?

Wow, Batman. Bruce Timm would be proud.

If there is one problem with the April design I had form 2K3... she's way too freakin' pale! And in this photo, almost looks ghost like...

But they don't look too bad. I just hate too see the classic designs go, as there was nothing wrong with them....

These look really, really good! Can't wait to see what our villains look like!

Casey is fine. But I prefer the 2k3 cartoon design for April. I hardly recognized April in this drawing. PLEASE go back to April's 2k3 design.

They're different. I'll probably have to stare at 'em a while before I really know what I think, but my initial reaction is positive. Casey looks pretty cool... like a beefed-up version of his movie design. I had no problem with 2k3 April except for the coloring (hair and skin), and I did like that she had somewhat natural proportions. This April is more petite, but I'm glad that her red hair is a brand of red that could actually exist outside of artificial means.

Anyone else feel that April is just too damn skinny?

Alex "Toon" Deligiannis said...

I personally don't think she's too skinny; she could be a bit beefier, but they both look pretty cool to me. I still hate the line quality. It offers no depth the the form... but anything to cut costs, eh? But aside from that, Murphy, can you offer any input as to source of this image? I mean, is it a screen grab or a photo of a screenshot? I ask because, aside from being grainy, the colors are very blown out. Or is this actually the look they're going for?

This is a scan of a print and is a bit washed out due to the conversion. April will not appear this pale.

Somewhere I've got a character layout sheet of all the Superman Animated designs, and these would fit right in with those. They're actually pretty nice, overall. So for clarity's sake, aside from the obvious scan-related issues, how "prelimenary" are these? Are we still in the concept phase where this look could be totally scrapped in favor of something more 2K3 related (or a new direction altogether), or is this more or less a sure thing in terms of the general look they are going for?

m. said...

While still in the concept stage, I'm told that this is the general if not specific direction that things are headed towards. Seal of approval given by PL.

Yes, April does seem too thin, as she did in the movie. This could prove to be one more unrealistic female ideal to chip away at young girls' self esteem. We are flooded enough with unrealistic ideas of what is beautiful. Meh.

Overall, I still like these better than the FF look. We aren't going to go back to the original 2K3 look, so this is not a bad compromise. And I really do like the 2007 movie influence.

Except for April. Someone buy her a cheeseburger or something...

One other question, Murphy.... with the new show resembling the movie so closely, where does this leave Playmates in terms of toys? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they'll find a way to issue yet another line of redundant (but must-have) Leo, Don, Mikey, Raph, April, and Casey figures, but with these designs looking so much like the film incarnations, is there anything intentionally being done to set them apart? Or are there no plans for a 2K8 cartoon line of figures set apart from the current movie-inspired ones?

This has been said several times, but I agree--April needs to not look like a toothpick. She's one of the few female characters in TMNT, she trains with Master Splinter, and she does her share of fighting...it should show in her body. The old 2k3 April definitely had some muscle, and some nice curves, though at times her waist was frightening...this April is venturing into the "tiny tiny pixie" cartoon female that always frustrates me. Not nearly as bad as the inhumanly thin Ape in the movie, but still not the direction I wish her bod was going in. And why does her head look so...big? Casey looks pretty cool though--bigger than the movie but not quite Hun-like proportions either.

Cheeseburgers, lots and lots of cheeseburgers. No one listens to me when I say how thin April is (here and in the movie), how bad the imagery is for young girls, etc. It's a boy's world here, that's for sure.

Anyway, yes, Alex, Playmates will undoubtedly find inspiration from the 2K8 designs to flood the world with new iterations of the basic TMNT and friends. At this point, as far as I know, the cartoon and movie-based figures are sort of melting into a single line of action figures, a move also reflected in the packaging.

April needs more curves!

Just like the original 1987 April.

2k3 April was fine- but 1987 April was even hotter due to her curves and her lips and her attitude.

WPLJTV said...

Again, for lack of sounding like a broken record....
It just goes too show why I hate this type of animation...usually no curves/roundness or detail. Seasons 1-4 brought up such beautiful animation and it just got worse from there....

You'd think a multi-million dollar franchise wouldn't skimp on the one thing that makes it good. art :).

We should all be thankful that there's a new season at all. It was kind of touch and go there for a while.

Alex "Toon" Deligiannis said...

That's for sure. I'm looking forward to it.
And with the 1987 April brought into consideration, I'm switching my stance; this design is most definitely too skinny. The 1987 April was very niiiiice.

GreenWillow said...

I'm grateful! Really. Skinny legs and all.

Very true. But it's part of a fans job description too bitch and moan untill we see the final product ;).

Ahh well, I'll give it a shot, especially since these are only concept drawings.

Oh My,
Thanks for sharing this with us Murph!
Casey looks great almost the same as he did before.
April on the other hand doesn't look so good she's to skinny like you said. Hopefully some revisions can be made.
I am happy we're getting a new show but it doesn't hurt to give an opinion. :)

The only real issue I have with these concepts are the colors, but it sounds like the scan can account for that, so hopefully it's all good there.

I do agree April could use a few cheeseburgers in her (Mmm... cheeseburgers..), but I wouldn't go so far as to call the original cartoon April a better role model for girls as far as her figure is concerned. She may be curvy, but in the middle of all that she's got about a 12" waist. No thank you!

Colin said...

This looks great. April is not too skinny, i don't know why everyone is saying that.

And to all those complaning about how skinny she was in the movie, check out Mirage from The Incredibles and then say that again.

Dierna said...

Ooh.. Me likey the new look for Casey. Much cuter! :D

As for April.... yea...she looks like she's from the Winx Club (which had many VA's from TMNT).

Heidi said...

Just because you have a small waist does not mean that your body is unrealistic.

"has a naturally small waist"

April needs some beefing up. She could use stronger arms and legs, in addition to the feminine curves.

I am glad there will be a new season. I am just stating what worked in previous ones regarding April's character design.

They look perfect. I love 'em. I don't want to see a Fat April running... er walking, around. Now, Let's see some Turtle Action! :D

-->> ..they also look a bit more mature..

..a little older..to show a progression in time passing.

Good things .. >v<

I think April looks too young myself. I don't like Casey's shoes. But he looks age appropriate. April, however, looks too young.

And yes, I am glad for a new season. Especially if the same voice cast is being used from the 2K3 toon.

April is indeed too thin here, just as she and Karai were in the movie. It was on of my main gripes about the film. Toothpicks for women, I tell ya.

Casey looks nice in them designer jeans!

Murph, do you know if the Rat King will come back in the new season?

Ever so slightly edited from above...

I like where the Case design ended up. I wouldn't call it perfect, but it's definitely acceptable. Reasonably, with the Turtles gone so long, the pre-defined audience can understand that he started taking himself seriously and why he would clean up (as he now has a lady to impress :P).

April, on the other hand... Not bad, but absolutely not meeting my approval. Other than being a red-haired female, she looks nothing like 2K3 April. Were this to be a reboot rather than a continuation, I'd have no problem. But, all the wonderful personality traits she's been given in previous seasons, I can't imagine coming from this character design. While her proportions are of little concern to me, I echo the sentiment that she looks too young. In the premiere season, April identified herself as 23 years young (OMG! 23 in 2K3... just like me... ehhe ^_^' ). This new one looks 16. :/ Unless they're going with an alternate reality explanation, this will damage the believability for the 'returning' audience. If a balance was struck between the 2K3 design and this 2K8 design for April, I think it would be ideal. The best thing I have to say about it is that I'm so glad her hair isn't magenta this time around.

Sorry I had to make my first comment here so lengthy and preachy... but, I can only promise the preachiness won't be a regular thing. ^_^
