Recently in BBT, I gave a history of Tekumel, the highly detailed science-fantasy world of MAR Barker. If there’s one thing readers should remember, it is not only that Barker’s world is complex, but the history of the creations which bring this world to life are equally complex.
Prince of Skulls is depending on how one counts, either the first, second or fourth of the Tekumel novels, and should one be reading them in order (recommended) it comes after Lords of Tsamra and before A Death of Kings. (which would make it fourth in the series, if one begins with the two DAW paperbacks published in the 80s, although, for reasons that are complex, it was published before its series predecessor, Lords of Tsamra. And if you are wondering, Mitlanyal, also available from Zottola Publishing, although Tekumel-related, is not a novel and can be read in any order in which one wishes. Mitlanyal is a detailed guide to the religions, religious organizations and religious practices of Tsolyanu, the central nation of most Tekumel fiction and role playing games.
