Paul Rachman's documentary traces the history of 1980s hardcore by touching on the movers and shakers (Black Flag, Flipper) as well as the scenes that mattered. Candid interviews with the punks themselves prevent this from becoming another dull cultural-criticism exercise. The film focuses on how hardcore is more than just throwing down at shows -- it's a way of life. As one roadie turned minister puts it, "I'm still the same jackass I always was."
