Thanks to Juice Williams and Ron Zook, the various possibilities for the BCS Championship Game have come into clearer focus. There are still several ways that this could end up, but the following is a rundown of the five most likely matchups for Jan. 7. CONTINUED >>

Who's copying who? Too much harmony in human polls

Posted: Saturday, November 10, 2007 2:08 AM

In the midst of this turbulent college football season, there has been no shortage of bickering, bashing, complaints and controversies. But surprisingly, there’s a great deal of harmony among the human polls. All three of them are marching in synchronized step with each other.

This week, the Associated Press Poll and the Harris Interactive Poll share the same exact composition of 25 teams. In fact, 14 of them, including the first nine, occupy the same position in both polls. Three teams differ by only one spot and six more are separated by just two.

If not for Penn State’s inclusion at No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, all three human rankings would contain the same 25 schools.

Don't we need more bowl games?

Posted: Tuesday, November 06, 2007 12:25 PM

While trying to figure out what Tom Osborne is waiting for, I’m here to pose this week’s 20 questions:

After so much chaos, wouldn’t it be amazing if the Heisman Trophy ended up in the hands of the guy who was at the top of the list at the beginning of the season … Mr. Darren McFadden? And how about breaking off a little piece of it for his running mate Felix Jones?

More disappointment for Ducks?

Posted: Sunday, November 04, 2007 11:38 PM

With a month to go, the BCS is its usual mishmash. More often than not, however, the process works itself out. In the past nine seasons, the top two teams in the coaches poll have met in the “national championship game” six times.

But this season has been so wacky that it seems safe to assume that the teams selected to play for the BCS title will be called into serious question, whether or not they match the polls.

As many as four teams could end up making a legitimate claim at being in the top two.

That has got to be making the folks in Eugene pretty edgy these days. After all, they’ve already been burned by the BCS twice before.

Pats-Colts? Give me college football instead

Posted: Friday, November 02, 2007 12:32 AM

With the entire hubbub surrounding Sunday’s showdown between the Patriots and Colts, we were reminded of yet another reason why college football is superior to the NFL.

What really does the New England-Indianapolis game mean? Sure, one club will fall from the ranks of the undefeated, leaving only the other. Of course, it will be interesting to watch Peyton Manning and Tom Brady battle it out. But what does the game really mean in the grand scheme? Won’t they eventually play again to determine who goes to and wins the Super Bowl … just like they did last year? CONTINUED >>

20 questions, no upsets

Posted: Monday, October 29, 2007 5:54 AM

While wondering if the teams from the Boston area are about to take over the world, I’m here to pose this week’s 20 questions:

If it came down to undefeated Boston College and one-loss LSU vying for the final spot in the BCS title game, which team would you want? CONTINUED >>

USC's dynasty done, so who's next?

Posted: Sunday, October 28, 2007 2:04 AM

EUGENE, Ore. -- When the Autzen Stadium PA announcer said, "Bring on the Sun Devils," it got a much bigger roar from the crowd than the final gun which brought an end to Oregon's 24-17 victory over USC a few moments earlier.

Yup, it's hard to believe, but there are bigger fish to fry than the Trojans these days. CONTINUED >>

2 losses = BCS title game

Posted: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 9:15 PM

When Kirk Gibson limped to the plate and homered in his one and only appearance in the 1988 World Series, Vin Scully said: “In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!”

I heard that famous call in my head this morning after thinking about of how this 2007 college football season might end. Only this time, the Florida Gators were the ones taking advantage of a hanging slider and a handful of one-loss teams were collectively playing the role of the dismayed Oakland Athletics. 20 questions from wild weekend

Posted: Sunday, October 21, 2007 12:13 AM

As the thrills and spills of the 2007 season continue, I’m here to pose this week’s 20 questions:

With an 0-4 streak currently in progress, does anybody even want to be the No. 2 team at this point in the season? If you’re Frank Beamer, don’t you like your chances on Thursday night, hosting Boston College in Blacksburg?

Who said that a sophomore can’t win the Heisman Trophy? Can the voters really hold class standing against Tim Tebow? Isn’t he clearly the most outstanding player in college football this season? CONTINUED >>

You can bet on it: Kansas No. 1!

Posted: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 10:58 PM

With six or seven games under every belt, it’s time to check in on what I call the “alumni approval index,” which is derived from the combination of a team’s overall record with its record versus the point spread (in games that were on the board). For a lot of alums, just winning games isn’t enough. That’s only half of their happiness, if you know what I mean.

I know that point spreads attempt to even out betting rather than serve as scientific predictions of outcomes (Stanford at USC only missed by 42 points), but the guys in Las Vegas know more than most and I would trust their evaluations over those ridiculous six BCS computers … or the Harris Poll for that matter.
