AUSTIN - Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has been fined $10,000 by the Big 12 Conference for his critical remarks about officiating in Saturday's loss to Texas.
Leach also received a reprimand and was warned any future incidents could result in a suspension. Leach called the officiating a "total travesty" and the league's instant replay system "a total sham" following a 59-43 loss to Texas in Austin.
Leach and Texas Tech said they would offer no comment on the situation.
“Coach Leach’s public statements called into question the integrity and competence of game officials and the Conference’s officiating program,” Commissioner Dan Beebe said in a statement. “Accordingly the seriousness of this violation warrants a public reprimand and the largest fine issued to date by the Conference.”
Leach was particularly upset with three calls, including two that disallowed Texas Tech touchdowns in the third quarter. The first touchdown was overruled when replays showed the ball bounced off the turf in the end zone. On the next play, Tech had another touchdown pass negated by a holding penalty. Leach also said a late hit should have been called against the Longhorns.
